Panthers Fall To Penguins In Season Finale

Milwaukee finishes season 12-18

MILWAUKEE – Margaux Thompson had 13 kills to lead Youngstown State to a 25-19, 12-25, 25-23, 25-21 win over the Milwaukee volleyball team Saturday afternoon from the Beeghly Center.

"Youngstown State was an awfully motivated team today, and we just didn't match their effort," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We had a good game plan, you can see the numbers are there in the stat sheet, but we just didn't execute in those crucial moments.

"This is a disappointing ending to our season, but I want to say thank you to our two seniors for all they've given to our program over the past four years. They played well in their final match."

Bridget Wallenberger led all players with 22 kills. Kylie Wilks added another 13, and Jess Kalous another 10.

Mykie Olsen had a match-high 22 digs, while Lexie Uselding and Kailynn Mongan each chipped in with 11.

Jenn Dore dished out another 48 assists – finishing the season with 1,307.

After dropping the opening set, Milwaukee (12-18, 5-11 Horizon) responded in a big way in set number two. Tied at 3-3, UWM exploded with a 10-0 run to take complete control en route to rout in the second.

But Milwaukee couldn't carry that success into the next set as YSU (8-22, 1-15 Horizon) opened up the third with a 6-0 start. The Panthers rallied and put together a big run of their own to take their first lead at 16-14. A nail biter the rest of the way, the Penguins were able to find a way for the final two points to grab the 2-1 lead.

UWM was forced to play catchup in the fourth and never quite got close enough as the Penguins – playing with five seniors in their final home contest of the year – walked away with the win.
