EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Jorge Gonzalez scored two goals and the Milwaukee men's soccer team was held off the scoreboard for the first time this season in a 2-0 loss to SIUE Tuesday night at Korte Stadium.
Â
The Panthers (5-5-2) saw their win streak snapped against the Cougars (4-6-0), who doubled a one-goal advantage just moments after the second half started and closed it out from there.
Â
Milwaukee had some quality chances to get back into the contest, but could not connect.
Â
Jason Palitang Svensson had some of the better attempts, unfortunate to send his try just right of the post of a nice centering pass from
Nick Moon in the 63
rd minute. He also had a header in the 49
th minute in front off a long free kick from
Francesco Saporito.
Â
UWM could never get the offensive attack on track – finishing with a 9-to-7 advantage in shots – but a total that was only half of what the team came in averaging. In addition, only two of the nine were able to be directed on target.
Â
Down, 1-0, at intermission, the lead became a pair just seconds into the start of the period when Gonzalez struck again.
Â
His first goal came in the 16
th minute, created when Gonzalez came up with a turnover just outside of the goal box. He dribbled in and struck a blast to make it 1-0 at the 15:03 mark. The Panthers had a chance to tie quickly, but
Reid Stevenson could not get a header in front on target less than two minutes later.
Â
The squad remains on the road, heading to Ohio Saturday for a contest at Cleveland State. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CST.             Â
