ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Milwaukee women's soccer team scored a third goal right before the halftime horn and cruised from there, putting together a 4-0 victory Saturday evening at the OU Athletic Dome.
Â
The Panthers (12-0-3, 4-0-2 Horizon League) got a pair of goals from
McKaela Schmelzer to pace the offense against the Golden Grizzlies (2-12-1, 2-4-0 Horizon League), while also posting their 11
th shutout of the season on defense.
Â
The victory extends UWM's school-record unbeaten streak to 15 games and also marks the team's seventh win in a row on the road this fall.
Â
"Tonight was a good team win," head coach
Troy Fabiano said. "I thought we had a good week of training and it really carried over into tonight's game. The entire team was focused and gave great energy and effort."
Â
It was a slow start to the night for the Panther offense, but once they found their groove, the ball kept finding the back of the net.
Â
Schmelzer tallied her first of the night off a corner kick, heading in
Jen Eberhardy's effort at the 35:09 mark to make it 1-0.
Â
Less than four minutes later,
Saebryn Peel tallied her first goal of the season, assisted on the goal by
Aubrey Krahn.
Â
Milwaukee grabbed another in the first half, with Schmelzer sending in an Eberhardy free kick as the horn sounded. The goal was good and UWM took a 3-0 lead into the locker room.
Â
The defense really buckled down in the second half, with
Mallory Geurts needing just one save on the night to record her 11
th shutout of the season – tops in the nation. The Panthers actually did not allow a shot in the second half, all while subbing freely down the stretch. In all, 23 different players saw the field, with six players recording points.
Â
The scoring wasn't quite done, with
Mackenzie Schill finding the back of the net off an assist from
Maddie Tetzke at the 69:31 mark. The goal was her sixth of the season.
Â
For the contest, Milwaukee ended with advantages of 12-to-3 in shots and 6-to-2 in corner kicks. Schmelzer had a game-high four shots, all of which were on goal.
Â
It's a big game in the Horizon League standings next, as UWM welcomes league-newcomer IUPUI to Engelmann Stadium Wednesday evening. The Jaguars currently sit in first place with a 6-0 league mark, with the Panthers close behind at 4-0-2.
