Volleyball Improves To 2-0 With Sweep Of Akron

Team looks to stay perfect tomorrow at 1 pm

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee volleyball team kept things rolling from their season-opening win with a 3-0 sweep of Akron in the second match of the Pepsi Panther Invitational Friday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

UWM was dominant from start to finish, beginning on a 7-0 run in the first set and never looking back for the 25-13, 25-20- 25-14 win.

"Our team played really well and I'm so proud of everybody," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We had a game play and executed it. It was just a great job by the team."

"I think we came out with a lot of confidence knowing that we needed to and we didn't just out well in the first match, so I was proud they were able to accomplish that."

The Panthers were on fire at the net, hitting an incredible .376 for the match – including .441 in the second set – and racking up 13 total blocks and nearly holding Akron to negative hitting in the quick three-set win.

Individually, Caitlin Schultz led the attack with 12 kills, while Jess Kalous had nine and Bridget Wallenberger added eight. Wallenberger also was a force on the defensive side of the net with nine blocks.

Myanna Ruiz led the back side of the defense with 16 digs and freshman setter Jenn Dore guided UWM with 35 assists in the win.

"Jenn is doing such a nice job balancing the offense and giving really good balls for the hitters to hit," Johnson said. "I'm really excited about that because it's so early in the season and she can just continue to get better."

As mentioned, the Panthers came out in set number one firing on all cylinders. A service ace from Ruiz forced an Akron timeout at 5-0 and the lead would jump to 7-0 before the Zips even got on the board. Milwaukee never let Akron in the match, holding them to -.280 for the set in the convincing early win.

Set two was played much closer most of the way before Milwaukee once again showed their stuff and pulled away. Tied 17-all, the Panthers took advantage of a service error and never looked back. Kills from Kalous, Schultz and a block by Kalous and Dore sparked the lead to 22-17 before another blast from Schultz closed things out.

The third showed a different side of this young team. After falling down 7-3, the Panthers displayed their resolve for all to see with a rousing comeback on both sides of the ball. One of Kylie Wilks' five kills capped an 8-1 run to give UWM an 11-8 lead just like that. After a brief response by the Zips, it was all Milwaukee the rest of the way. Ruiz found her spots with two more service aces to cap a 7-0 run to make it 19-11 and another kills from Wilks completed the sweep.

Milwaukee will look to close out their home tournament on top Saturday at 1 p.m. against Western Illinois from the Klotsche Center. Fans are invited to stay after the match for an autograph session with the team.
