MILWAUKEE - Maddie Tetzke scored with just over 12 minutes remaining to help the Milwaukee women's soccer team break through and earn a 1-1 draw against Illinois State Saturday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium.
Â
Tetzke tallied at the 77:34 mark, finishing a long ball from
Lourdes Onwuemeka when she beat the charging goalkeeper to the ball and struck from about 12 yards away to make it 1-1.
Â
The Panthers, playing in their only home exhibition contest of the preseason, fell behind in the third minute against the Redbirds and were finally rewarded late in the contest after dominating opportunities for the majority of the day.
Â
Due to a mutual decision by both coaches, the teams played without uniform numbers, so official statistics were not kept. Unofficial stats showed Milwaukee with 16-to-10 shot advantage on the afternoon, including 9-to-4 in shots on goal.
Â
UWM got behind early, with the Redbirds taking advantage of a miscommunication along the backline. Just 2:16 into the contest, the home team was staring down a 1-0 deficit.
Â
Plenty of quality chances followed, with a handful of impressive saves keeping them at zero on the scoreboard.
Â
Callie O'Donnell just missed connecting on a long ball in the 14
th minute and
Cassidy Blanchard's header off a corner kick went just high in the 23
rd.
Â
Tetzke looked to have a goal in the 33
rd, zinging a header off a long cross from the opposite side of the goal off the foot of
Sydney Senn on target, only to be snagged at the post.
Â
Maria Stephans and Onwuemeka had cracks from distance in the 35
th and 38
th minutes, with Stephans flying just over and a nice save made at the post on the other attempt.
Â
Gaby Schwartz ran onto a square ball and rifled a shot just over the bar in the 54
th, while O'Donnell and Stephans were denied back-to-back at close range in the 58
th.
Â
The team was still trying to find the go-ahead goal late, but
Ashley Burkhardt's last-ditch attempt after a nice set up by
McKaela Schmelzer was caught at the line with 15 seconds left.
Â
The teams settled on the draw and did not play overtime.
Â
Mallory Geurts started and played around 70 minutes, making two saves.
Lauren Rice played the final 20-plus, which included a spectacular diving stop in the 83
rd minute to preserve the draw.
Â
With the exhibition slate behind them, the Panthers prepare for the season opener Friday, welcoming Akron to town. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
