Milwaukee Baseball Held In Check In Loss To Raiders

Will play again this afternoon in elimination game

FAIRBORN, Ohio - Three Wright State pitchers combined to hold the Milwaukee baseball team to just one run in a 5-1 loss Friday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium in the Horizon League Tournament.

The Panthers (32-25) could never get the offense rolling against the top-seeded Raiders (43-15), who got on the board courtesy of a pair of unearned runs in the second inning and added insurance from there.

Daulton Varsho drove in Dan Barwick in the top of the eighth inning to get UWM on the scoreboard.

The Milwaukee offense was held in check, recording just three hits overall on the day. In addition to Varsho, Cole Heili and Eric Solberg also posted base hits.

The result gave Elijah Goodman (5-1) his first loss of the season despite allowing just a pair of earned runs in his 6.0 innings of work. He struck out five, but ended up hurting his cause by hitting a pair of batters and walking four.

Both teams had threats early, only to see the starting pitchers calmly deal with the trouble. The Raiders were the first to threaten, putting runners on second and third with nobody out in the bottom of the second inning. Goodman certainly did not look like a freshman, recording a swinging strikeout and back-to-back looking K's to keep the game scoreless.

The next half inning was Milwaukee's turn. Billy Quirke's speed forced a bad throw on a bunt attempt and then went first-to-third after the pitcher's failed pickoff attempt. Robby Sexton was up to the task as well, punching out consecutive Panthers to nearly match the effort Goodman put in.

WSU jumped on top in the fourth, scoring that pair of unearned runs to break up the pitcher's duel. It doubled the lead in the fifth, helped along by a pair of walks and a hit batter.

Sexton (6-3) picked up the win with a strong outing. He allowed just two hits over 6.2 scoreless frames, walking three but striking out eight.

The Panthers face an elimination contest next, taking on No. 3 Valparaiso at 3 p.m. CST later today. The game will feature a live broadcast on ESPN3 as well as live statistics. All links are available on the Milwaukee website.
