ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Milwaukee baseball team led on a pair of occasions but could not put Oakland University away, eventually falling by a final score of 6-5 in the 10th inning Saturday afternoon at Oakland Baseball Field.
Â
The Panthers (31-24, 17-11 Horizon League) were in position to sweep the weekend series, but saw the Golden Grizzlies (23-26, 11-14 Horizon League) rally to tie the game for a second time in the eighth inning before eventually winning on a walkoff single in the 10th inning.
Â
"We were unfortunate to let that one get away," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "We did a lot of good things in the game. It was a great opportunity to get some guys playing time who have been on ice and I thought they played very well."Â
Â
Highlighting the day was a two-hit outing by
Luke Meeteer, breaking the school record for career hits when he led off the third inning with a solid single to left field. That safety gave him 268 in his time in a Milwaukee uniform to break the program record of 267 formerly held by Jesse Hart (2005-08).
Â
It has been quite the senior season for Meeteer, who has broken career records for stolen bases, at bats, runs scored and hits already and still has the opportunity to set new standards for games played and walks.
Â
Meeteer would go on to add hit No. 269 in the sixth inning, an RBI-single that gave UWM a 4-2 lead at the time.

Â
"We had some opportunities early in that game to bust it open and we just couldn't come up with that big hit," Doffek said. "I am very proud of the team and the way we handled the second half of the season. We can't wait to get that tourney going!"
Â
The Panthers would lead 2-0 after the second, scoring on an error and an RBI-single by
Ian Ross. The offense came up big time and time again on the afternoon, recording 10 different two-out hits in building leads of 4-2 and 5-4.
Â
Oakland's Mike Brosseau knotted the game with his 10th home run of the campaign in the sixth inning, however, making it a new game at 4-4.
Â
Chris Kelly immediately turned the momentum, edging the Panthers back ahead an inning later with a two-out single through the right side to make it 5-4.
Â
Milwaukee could not hold that advantage either, with the Grizzlies making it 5-5 in the eighth on a triple and winning it on Ian Yetsko's RBI back up the middle.
Â
Milwaukee collected an impressive 17 hits on the day, led by a career-effort from Kelly, who finished the day 4-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Â
Mike Jordahl went 3-for-5 and Ross,
Daulton Varsho, Meeteer and
Jeremy Wright all finished with two hits apiece.
Â
The postseason is up next and the Panthers hold the No. 2 seed in the event. Their first game will take place on Thursday.
