Panthers Win Again, Top Redbirds 4-3

Big weekend road trip awaits

MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee baseball team won for the sixth time in its last seven games, topping Illinois State by a final score of 4-3 Wednesday at Henry Aaron Field.

The Panthers (26-21) used six different pitchers and some timely hitting against the Redbirds (15-31), finishing off a season sweep of the visitors with their fourth victory against them this season.

Nick Unes provided most of the heavy lifting, recording a two-run triple to open the scoring in the fourth inning and a pair of doubles later in the contest, adding another RBI on a two-bagger in the eighth inning that proved to be the difference.

Luke Meeteer recorded a pair of hits and scored twice, adding another career record to his resume in the process. With 180 runs scored in his UWM career, Meeteer moves past the former mark of 179 set by Darin Haugom (1997-2001).

Austin Schulfer got the start and threw the first two innings, allowing one hit and adding a pair of strikeouts.

Jared Reklaitis (3-1) picked up the victory with his two scoreless frames, adding the identical pitching line Schulfer had.

"I think for the most part, we pitched really well today," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "It was really encouraging to see the way Schulfer threw the ball … easily the best he has thrown the ball and he is certainly capable of that."

Jake Sommers and Mason Pingel added a scoreless inning each and Zach Brenner worked two shutout frames following that. Cal Haley worked around some base runners in the ninth but did pick up his third save of the season.

Unes finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

"Unes swung the bat really well and picked us up," Doffek said. "It turned out to be a good team win."

Besides Meeteer, the only other Panther to record a hit was Eric Solberg, who knocked in a two-out run in the sixth to make it 3-0 at the time.
"That is what I just told the team, we have to execute in moving guys over," Doffek said. "Two-out hits, throw strikes and play defense – that is a recipe that will win you games."

It was all pitching both ways early. Milwaukee had just one baserunner on a walk over the first three innings, with ISU's Jeffrey Barton throwing well in striking out three.

UWM met the first Redbird reliever with a four-pitch walk drawn by Aaron Buban. He stole second and Meeteer singled to third base to put a pair of runners on. Unes laced a 1-2 pitch down to the right field corner to make it 2-0.

Illinois State broke up the shutout in the top of the sixth, but Solberg got that run right back in the bottom of the frame. In the eighth, Meeteer beat out a single to shortstop and scored on Unes' double.

Up next, the Panthers head out on a key road trip as far as seeding goes in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament. Up first is a doubleheader at Northern Kentucky Friday. First pitch in game one is set for 11 a.m. CST.
