IOWA CITY, Iowa - Six Iowa pitchers combined to limit the Milwaukee baseball team to just one run in a 9-1 defeat Wednesday night at Duane Banks Field.
Â
The Panthers (11-13) allowed the Hawkeyes (12-14) to get on the board with an unearned run in the first inning and could never get on track offensively.
Â
"It just was not a great effort for us in any aspect today," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "It was just one of those days where we got beat in every phase of the game."
Â
Iowa took advantage of a pair of errors in the first inning to get on the board. That lone run looked very valuable at the time, as neither team was able to record a hit in the game until the bottom of the third inning.
Â
But, the Hawkeyes got to starter
Austin Schulfer (0-3) in the fourth, plating five runs to take control at 6-0 on the scoreboard, with most of the damage coming on a wind-aided three-run home run to right by Mason McCoy.
Â
The Panthers finally broke up the shutout in the seventh inning when
Daulton Varsho singled, went to second on a passed ball, to third on a fly out and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Nick Unes. Varsho led the offense with a two-hit night.
Â
Schulfer allowed four earned runs in his 4.0 innings, walking none and striking out three.
Jay Peters worked a scoreless sixth and
Elijah Goodman followed with a 1-2-3 seventh.
Â
The Panthers return home to try a second time to open the home portion of their 2016 schedule. Weather permitting, Milwaukee welcomes Wright State for a weekend series, starting with a 3 p.m. matchup Friday set to be televised live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
