MANHATTAN, Kan. - Brian Keller threw a complete game gem and
Nick Unes hit a grand slam to send the Milwaukee baseball team past Kansas State by a score of 14-1 Friday afternoon at Tointon Stadium.
Â
The Panthers (4-9) handed the Wildcats (8-5) their first loss at home in 2016 and also  snapped their winning streak at six games overall with four runs in the first inning followed by Unes' grand slam in the second.
Â
"Today was a really good team win," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "A great job on the mound by Brian … he just kept pounding it. Obviously, it was great to see Unes come up huge today as well. He has been grinding quality at bats this year and not getting rewarded. He had two huge run-producing at bats to give us the momentum. I also thought a huge play was Heili throwing out the runner at the dish in the first inning after we scored four times in the first – just a huge play."
Â
Keller (1-3) did the rest, throwing the fourth complete game of his career. He scattered just five hits – only two after the first inning – finishing the game allowing one earned run and one walk while striking out five.
Â
After getting out of a jam in the bottom of the first, Keller retired 11 batters in a row from the second through the fifth inning and did not allow a runner to reach second base over the final three frames.
Â
Daulton Varsho led the offense with a 4-for-6 day, having a shot at the cycle in each of his final three at bats after recording a triple, double and single in his first three plate appearances of the day. He ended the afternoon with a career high in hits, scoring three times and driving in one.
Â
Luke Meeteer went 2-for-3 with two walks and three runs scored, setting some history of his own in the first inning, when he stole career base No. 74 to break the UWM career record of 73 that he shared with Darin Haugom (1997-2001). He would steal No. 75 a few pitches later.
Â
"For Meeteer to get the all-time stolen base record was great to see," Doffek said. "It's hard to believe it has taken us 13 games to get him the right situation. He's just a great player and we expect many more from him."
Â
UWM set a season high in runs and pounded out 14 hits. Unes finished with two hits and tied his collegiate-best with six RBI.
Cole Heili had two hits and drove in a pair and
Ian Ross finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
Â
Milwaukee jumped on the K-State starter right out of the box, scoring four times before Keller took the mound. Varsho tripled in the first run, Meeteer knocked in Varsho and Unes dumped a two-run single into left center to close out the first-inning rally.
Â
K-State appeared to respond and had the bases loaded with two outs. Heili came through with a huge play at the time, throwing out a runner at the plate on a single to left to limit the damage to just one run in the first.
Â
From there, the table was set for the first grand slam for a Panther since Will Fadness hit one at New Mexico State on February 15, 2013.
Eric Solberg walked to lead off the second and went to third on Varsho's double. Meeteer drew another walk and Unes followed by blasting a majestic two-out home run to deep right on a 3-2 pitch that emptied the bases and gave Milwaukee complete control of the game.
Â
The Panthers added a run in the fourth on a single from Ross and Keller kept on cruising. UWM then blew the game open in the eighth, scoring five runs on four hits.
Â
Solberg walked, Varsho singled and Meeteer also drew a bases on balls to load the bases.
Jeremy Wright came through with a pinch-hit single that scored a pair of runs and Heili followed with a two-run two-bagger that made the score 13-1.
Dan Barwick then closed out the scoring with a pinch-hit single to right.
Â
The teams continue the series Saturday afternoon, with first pitch set for 2:05 p.m. that also includes an ESPN3 broadcast courtesy of K-State.
