Hot-Shooting Penguins Too Much For Milwaukee

YSU hits 50 percent of its shots for the game

MILWAUKEE – Youngstown State shot 50 percent from the floor and hit 12 of the 26 three-pointers in a 70-62 win over the Milwaukee women's basketball team Saturday afternoon from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (13-10, 7-5 Horizon) had another huge game from Jenny Lindner, finishing with 23 points, six rebounds and four steals, but it wasn't enough to cool off the hot-shooting Penguins (16-8, 7-6 Horizon)

"I'm a little disappointed in where we were at today," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "I didn't think we had the same energy level that we normal put forth and we have our Milwaukee style of play and I didn't think that we performed that for the entire game today. There were moments where we were playing well and then there were other moments where we looked complacent and even a little tired.

"This is a learning moment. We're a young team. We have to understand how important each game is, especially these ones at home. We'll go back to the drawing board and get ready for next week."

Lindner was the hot hand for the third-straight game, shooting 9-16 from the floor and connecting on all five of her free-throw attempts for a game-high 23 points and a career-high four steals.

Sierra Ford-Washington also had it going Saturday for Milwaukee, scoring 15 points and collecting five rebounds one game after sinking the game-winner over Cleveland State.

But the Panthers couldn't seem to keep the pressure on Youngstown State, who had four players reach double figures in scoring and hit numerous big shots to end would-be big Milwaukee runs.

It was a back-and-forth first half with both teams feeling each other out and neither taking control in the early going. UWM carried a 31-30 lead into the halftime locker room.

After an and-one by Lindner gave the Panthers a four-point cushion to start the second half, it looked like things might start swinging Milwaukee's direction.

But, with the game knotted at 45 apiece with three minutes left in the third, YSU rattled off 11 straight (nine coming from deep balls) to claim a 56-47 advantage after 30 minutes.

UWM would whittle the lead to just four after a pair of Lindner free throws, but Nikki Arbanas – the league's leading three-point shooter – hit her only shot from behind the arc all game to push the Penguin lead back to seven to end the Panther comeback attempt.

Jenna Hirsch and Alison Smolinski combined for 28 points off the bench for the Penguins.

Milwaukee will look to get back on track with a trip to Valparaiso on Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest against the Crusaders.
