Milwaukee Women Impressive In Lone Exhibition Contest

Kostowicz led the way with 25 points

MILWAUKEE – Steph Kostowicz scored 25 points to lead all players as the Milwaukee women's basketball team steadily pulled away from Parkside in its lone exhibition contest Monday, 85-63, from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers led from start to finish and withstood pushes from the feisty Rangers, comfortably pulling away in the second half.

"I thought we came out strong," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "It was nice to see us go on that big run right at the beginning of the game. And a lot of credit to Parkside.

"But I thought our team really stuck together. It was really nice to get everybody in the game and for quality minutes. A lot of people really stepped up, which is really nice to know that we can be a deep team this year, but we still have a lot to work on."

Kostowicz led the Panthers with 25 points, while grabbing six rebounds. Sierra Ford-Washington had 15 points, and Jenny Lindner added another 10 points and five rebounds.

Freshman Lizzie Odegard had a team-high seven rebounds to go with eight points in just 12 minutes of action.

The Panthers were clearly excited to get this game going, pouncing out to a quick 10-0 lead after a three-pointer from Ford-Washington. The lead grew to 13 after a free throw from Akaylah Hayes, making it 18-5 not even six minutes into the game.

Parkside battled back and showed fight, whittling the Panther lead down to just three after a triple from Brittney Fair, who led the Rangers with 15 points on the night.

But, UWM responded in a big way with another 10-0 run capped by a fast break lay in from Hayes.

The Panthers' lead grew to 16 at the end of the third quarter before things opened up in the final stanza. Odegard hit a pair of threes, with another from downtown falling for Jaye Two Bears in between early in the fourth to quickly give Milwaukee a 70-45 edge and its largest lead of the night.

Up big, the offense continued to fire on all cylinders, with Christina Wakeman, Bailey Farley and Jordyn Swan all getting in the mix for the 22-point victory.

Milwaukee won the rebounding battle, 37-30, and had 20 assists on their 28 made field goals. UWM also shot 48-percent from the floor and got to the free throw line 28 times in the opener.

"The mentality shift for us coming into the season is that we really want to be the aggressors," Rechlicz said. "We want to be physically and mentally tougher than our opponents. And one of the ways you can chart that is by getting to the free throw line. We got there quite a few times tonight…and if we can continue to do that, it plays into the pace of our game and puts us in a really good position."

UWM returns to the court Sunday to kick off the 2016-17 regular season by welcoming Western Illinois to the Klotsche Center for a 4 pm contest.
