Defense Sparks Milwaukee To Big Road Win

Swan with 13 points off the bench

CHICAGO – Three players scored in double figures and the Milwaukee women's basketball team had a strong defensive showing en route to a 73-46 win over Loyola University Chicago Sunday afternoon from Gentile Arena.

UWM (2-1) raced out to a 20-point lead at halftime before stretching the lead to 27 at the final buzzer – the largest margin of victory in Kyle Rechlicz's four-plus years as head coach.

"I thought we came out really focused today and our energy to start the game was excellent," Rechlicz said. "We pride our upperclassmen and our leaders on, whether you're on the court or off the court, to be really energized, and I thought we brought that from tipoff. We really made a run and made a push, but a lot of that was due to our bench and how much they were talking and really guiding our team out on the court."

Steph Kostowicz led all players with 17 points to go with five rebounds, a pair of assists and steals and a block. Sierra Ford-Washington also stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Jordyn Swan also reached double digits with 13 points in 13 minutes.

Milwaukee claimed a season-high 12 steals and forced an impressive 25 turnovers by Loyola (0-3).

The Panthers came out strong and left little doubt early, establishing a big lead after just the first 10 minutes. A pair of baskets by Ford-Washington quickly made it 4-0 and a triple from Kostowicz gave UWM an 11-3 lead not even five minutes into the game. Alyssa Fischer got into the action to make it 19-6 at the end of one.

Milwaukee's defense was the story of the second quarter, forcing four turnovers on Loyola's first four possessions and eight overall in the frame. A lay in by Jaye Two Bears capped a 10-0 Panther run that bridged both quarters for a 25-6 UWM lead. Jamie Reit also got into the action with a three and the Panthers led by 20 at the break.

After the break, UWM stretched its lead in the early going of quarter number three. Alexis Lindstrom's layup gave Milwaukee a 21-point edge before a three-pointer from Fischer made ballooned the lead to 47-22.

In the fourth, Two Bears and Swan hit back-to-back threes, with another triple from Swan shortly after for Milwaukee's largest lead of the day at 29.

Loyola added a late lay in to make it a 27-point final margin of victory. That marks the largest win for Milwaukee under Rechlicz and the biggest win since a 79-48 win over Chicago State on Dec. 15, 2011.

The Panthers shot 47.5 percent from the floor Sunday and out-rebounded the Ramblers 38-22.

Milwaukee will look to keep things rolling on Tuesday, welcoming Wisconsin to the Klotsche Center for a 7 pm contest. Fans can watch the game live on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel, while the first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free Panther t-shirt.
