Panthers Make Quick Work Of Crusaders On Senior Day

Milwaukee heads into post season on hot streak

MILWAUKEE – Four players reached double-digit digs as the Milwaukee volleyball team turned in another outstanding performance Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of Valparaiso from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers made quick work of their opponents for the second-straight day with back-to-back sweeps, holding Valpo to .008 hitting in the 25-11, 25-16, 25-23 win.

"Our team is really coming together right now," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We've had a lot of adversity in the last probably six weeks, so it's really exciting to see everybody step up. This was such a team effort, again."

Myanna Ruiz had 18 kills to lead all players, with a trio more Milwaukee players also reaching double figures in digs. Kylie Wilks was next with 13, while Lexie Uselding and Louise Kiekhofer each had 12.

Jenn Dore once again guided the offense very well Saturday, handing out 33 assists in the three-set win.

Jess Kalous had another outstanding performance, leading the team with 11 kills to go with her seven blocks. Bridget Wallenberger also had a strong showing at the net, tallying eight kills and six blocks.

Milwaukee was also over VU right from the start. The Panthers scored the first five points of the match and forced a quick Valpo timeout. After another 5-0 spurt, UWM jumped its lead to 16-5 on a kill by Taylor Mansfield. Milwaukee was one step ahead of their opponents the entire first set, holding them to negative hitting and closing it out with another 4-0 run.

Valpo did its best in the second, taking an early 5-4 lead before the Panthers responded with a 6-1 run. The Crusaders would do there best to keep things close, but Milwaukee once again found its rhythm midway through the set and never looked back to take the 2-0 lead into the break.

UWM once again stormed out to a big lead in the third, but had to hold off a valiant Valpo run in this one. Up 13-6, the Crusaders used a 6-0 run of their own to make things interesting. Valpo snagged its first lead of the set at 16-14 before the Panthers regrouped, scored on three-straight and never looked back.

Milwaukee dominated the stat sheet Saturday, leading in blocks 13-8, digs 66-54, assists 38-23, aces 5-4, and kills 41-25.

Before the match, the Panthers said thank you to its three-member senior class made up of Taylor Mansfield, Kaisa Mattson and Myanna Ruiz.

Milwaukee, which had already clinched the No. 5 seed heading into next week's Horizon League Tournament prior to today's match, now gets ready for the league tournament, starting Friday. Cleveland State hosts this year's tournament after winning the regular season title. The Horizon League regular season concludes Sunday.
