Volleyball Battles Back For Big Win Over Furman

Dunbar’s career-high 25 kills sparks offense

MILWAUKEE – Maggie Dunbar slammed home a career-high 25 kills to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team to a come-from-behind, 3-2 win over Furman Saturday afternoon in the Pepsi Panther Invitational from the Klotsche Center.

UWM dropped two of the first three sets before rallying for an 18-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-11, 15-12 win over the Paladins (0-2).

Milwaukee improves to 2-0 to start the season and will go for the sweep of its home tournament Saturday night at 7:30 against Missouri State.

"Furman is a contender every year for their conference, so they are absolutely used to winning," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We weren't playing our best, but I like the way our team reacted. We put people in off the bench and we needed everyone today."

Dunbar led all players with a career-high 25 kills, with freshman Maddie Williams adding another 12.

Myanna Ruiz (22) and Mykie Olsen (10) both were in double figures in digs. Kayla Price again orchestrated the attack with 42 assists.

Milwaukee just couldn't get on track in the first set. Furman hit an impressive .355 in the opening frame to take the early lead.

The Panthers were able to rebound in the second and scrap for a hard-earned win. Dunbar led the way with five kills in the frame, hitting .500 to lead the way offensively. Defensively, seven Panthers registered at least one dig with Ruiz leading the way with nine.

Set number three was very similar to set one. Furman hit .371 and capitalized on six Panther miscues to take the 2-1 lead.

A few changes to the lineup to start set four sparked Milwaukee. Sophomore Jess Kalous was huge at the net, posting two emphatic solo blocks. Dunbar had six kills in the fourth alone and the Panthers had five service aces to make a statement heading into the fifth.

UWM kept that momentum going to start the fifth. Dunbar added another three kills right out of the gates as the Panthers jumped out to an early 6-2 lead. Kalous and Williams each added two kills of their own and an ace by Price swelled the lead to 14-10 before clinching the win.

"Maggie was able come back from yesterday and just really be a force," Johnson said. "She was very hard for them to stop. Maddie Williams came through as a freshman and she's finding her way and that makes me really excited. We needed somebody to come through on the offense and that was excellent for them to come through today and do that."

The Panthers close out the Panther Invitational with one more match Saturday night, taking on Missouri State (2-0) at 7:30 p.m.
