EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - SIU Edwardsville added a late insurance goal after scoring in the 68
th minute to help secure a 2-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team Friday night at Korte Stadium.
"We want to win every time we step on the field," head coach
Kris Kelderman said. "But, I am pleased with my team despite a 2-0 loss. I thought they had the better of it in the first half and that we played much better in the second. Possession improved greatly, and we had some good opportunities to score as well. It was encouraging. We made progress and know that there are bigger and better things ahead for us."
The Panthers played the Cougars – who are tabbed as the team to beat in the 2015 Missouri Valley Conference race and went to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2014 – to a scoreless affair the first 67-plus minutes in a contest played in front of a SIEU Move-In crowd of 2,040.
"I thought it was a very good experience for our young group of guys to play against a very good SIU Edwardsville team," Kelderman said. "It was a great environment and a great crowd and it was a good test for our guys."
Despite combining for nine first half shots, neither team found the back of the net in the first 45 minutes and the two sides went to the locker room scoreless.
That deadlock ended in the 68
th minute when TC Hull slid a shot past the UWM keeper to make it 1-0.
The Panthers pressed for an equalizer, ending the night with 10 total shots, but could not break through. The Cougars then capitalized late with the insurance strike in the 86
th minute.
"We are a very young team and started six freshmen today," Kelderman said. "It was their third game and for us, it was just our second and no one had played more than 45 minutes so far. Regardless of the result, I think our team made progress today, which is good to see."
Senior
Declan Rodriguez and sophomore
Nick Moon each led the offense with three shots. Freshman
Matthias Binder added a pair of on-frame attempts.
Up next is the season opener, as the Panthers welcome Evansville to Engelmann Stadium next Friday for a 7 p.m. start.
