Baseball Caps Weekend Sweep With 4-3 Victory

Team improves to 8-3 at home

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team came back from one-run deficits on a pair of occasions to post a 4-3 victory over Youngstown State University Sunday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.

The Panthers (22-12, 9-8 Horizon League) trailed the Penguins (10-24, 4-14 Horizon League) by scores of 1-0 in the fifth inning and 2-1 in the seventh but plated three runs in their half of the inning to complete the weekend sweep with yet another one-run victory.

The offense collected just eight hits on the day, but was led by a perfect 3-for-3 effort from senior Derek Peake, who also walked once.

"Derek Peake really swung the bat well all weekend, so I was really happy with that," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "And Unes, you can see him coming out of the funk he was in and had a good game. That is the sign of a good team when it doesn't have to be the same two or three guys all the time. This lineup should allow for nine guys to contribute and I think over the next month you will see that."

Junior Nick Unes had an RBI-double in the seventh that made it 3-2, had a sac fly earlier in the contest and also came home with a big insurance run in the seventh on a passed ball. Senior Tyler Hermann also drove in a big run in the go-ahead rally.

Frank Califano paced the YSU attack with an impressive 4-for-5 outing. Jeremy Quinlan got the start and held UWM in check, scattering four hits and striking out five in his 6.0 innings of work.

Sophomore Justin Langley started and worked the first 6.0 innings. He allowed just one unearned run but was a bit wild, walking five to go along with four strikeouts.

"I thought their starting pitcher was outstanding," Doffek said. "He commanded both sides of the plate with two or three pitches. He did a really good job. Langley was not sharp but made some huge pitches when the balance of the game was on the line. He put up a one in the third when the bases were loaded, because if we drop down three or four runs there, with the way that guy was throwing, school might have been out. He did a great job."

The Penguins plated an unearned tally in the third and led by that score until Unes' sac fly in the fifth. Senior Cal Haley also allowed an unearned run in the top of the seventh.

But the Panthers wasted little time in retaking the lead. A YSU error started the frame and the run came home when Hermann's hot shot to third could not be handled. Hermann then scored on Unes double and the score was 4-2 when Unes trotted home on the passed ball.

Senior Cody Peterson was greeted roughly with back-to-back hits to make it a 4-3 game in the ninth inning, but he settled down to get a strikeout, a nice play by sophomore Eric Solberg on a line-drive up the middle for out No. 2 and a groundout to record his eighth save.

Up next, the Panthers head to Evanston, Ill., to take on Northwestern Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
