MILWAUKEE - UIC scored three runs after the bases were empty with two outs in the sixth inning to surge ahead and held on for a 4-3 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team Sunday afternoon at Henry Aaron Field.
Â
The Flames (16-12-1, 11-4 Horizon League) completed the doubleheader sweep over the Panthers (17-11, 6-8 Horizon League) after claiming a 5-0 victory in the opener.
Â
Milwaukee held a 2-0 lead with sophomore
Justin Langley (4-1) dominating the day. Through the first 5.2 innings, he allowed one hit, walked one and struck out eight. After taking a comebacker off the leg, the Flames rallied.
Â
"It was good to see Justin throw the ball so well in game two," UWM head coach
Scott Doffek said. "We had nobody on and two outs in the sixth and before you know it, they had three runs on one hit. We beat ourselves for sure."
Â
The Panthers helped UIC along with free passes, issuing four in the frame in addition to a hit batter. Senior
Derek Peake nearly pulled in a highlight-reel catch that would have ended the rally. Jeff Boehm sent a 3-2 pitch to the gap with the bases loaded, but Peake's attempt came up just short when the ball popped out of his glove when he hit the ground on the full-out diving effort.
Â
Down 4-2, Milwaukee kept trying to rally but UIC was up to the task each time. The Panthers loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but a line-drive double play quickly stalled the effort.
Â
They had the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth as well, putting runners on first and second with one out. Ryan Hinchley then induced a pop up for the second out. Senior
Mike Porcaro drove in a run with a single to left to make it 4-3, but Hinchley then closed out the contest with a strikeout.
Â
Junior
Luke Meeteer led the way with three hits, drove in a run and stole his 21
st base of the season. Sophomore
Eric Solberg had a hit and scored a run with a steal of home plate.
Â
The Flames won the opener behind a solid effort from Ian Lewandowski (4-2) and great defense. UIC came up with big play after big play, including a pair of diving stops for outs that thwarted Milwaukee rallies.
Â
"We played a clean game in the opener besides a pair of miscues," Doffek said. "I felt like we barreled a lot of balls in game one but just didn't get any results."
Â
Senior
Joe Pavlovich (2-1) was charged with his first loss of the season despite a quality outing. He worked into the eighth inning, not allowing an earned run on the day. He walked two and struck out four.
Â
The offense had just six hits, led by a 2-for-2 outing from freshman
Daulton Varsho. The team could not come up with clutch hits when needed, stranding seven in what was a 1-0 game into the eighth inning before the Flames added a trio of unearned insurance tallies. Boehm led the visitors with two hits and three RBI.
Â
Up next, it's a very busy week for the team once again, starting with a non-league doubleheader at Western Illinois Tuesday. Game one is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
