Milwaukee Baseball Team Tops Missouri Again, 5-1

Keller pitches a gem; UWM goes for sweep Sunday

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Junior Brian Keller allowed just one run in 7.0 innings and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team used a four-run fifth inning to claim a 5-1 victory over the University of Missouri Saturday afternoon at Taylor Stadium.

The Panthers (7-3) knocked off the Tigers (10-3) for the second straight day and have now tied the program record for best 10-game start to a campaign, equaling the 7-3 start back in 1995.

"This was just another very good team win," UWM head coach Scott Doffek said. "We went out and found a way on offense. We came up with a couple of big two-out hits to drive some runs in and then closed it out."

Keller (2-1) came through with a spectacular outing, striking out seven and walking just one in picking up the victory. He scattered six hits and gave up just one run, that coming in the second inning.

"It was another very good start for Brian Keller," Doffek said. "He pounded the zone with a good mix of pitches and we played very good defense behind him."

Senior Derek Peake and junior Mitch Ghelfi each went 2-for-4, scored a run and drove in another. Senior Sam Koenig extended his hitting streak to 10 games and drove in a run. The team ended the day with three triples, one apiece from Peake, junior Luke Meeteer and freshman Daulton Varsho.

The Panthers tied the game in the third when Meeteer tripled and came home on a Peake groundout and used that fifth-inning rally to earn the victory.

Varsho hit a three-bagger with one out and scored on a fielder's choice. Then, with two outs, Peake singled in front of an RBI-double by Ghelfi, with a Tiger error allowing another run to score. Koenig then drove in Ghelfi with a single to left to close out the scoring for both teams on the day.

Keller really settled in, retiring eight straight from the bottom of the fourth through the top of the seventh inning. He worked out of any trouble he got into before being relieved by senior Justin Jaquish to start the eighth. Jaquish was perfect, retiring all six batters he faced, two via strikeout.

Up next, the Panthers go for the sweep tomorrow, with first pitch against the Tigers set for 1 p.m.
