DAYTON, Ohio - Junior
Brian Keller of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee baseball team threw a complete-game but came up on the wrong end of a 1-0 decision in falling to Wright State Friday night at Nischwitz Stadium.
The Panthers (10-5, 2-2 Horizon League) had the tying run in scoring position with one out in the ninth against the Raiders (13-6, 4-0 Horizon League), but could not find a way to send the game to extra innings.
Keller (2-3) suffered the tough loss. He allowed just a single run in the second inning in a great effort on the mound for UWM. He scattered six hits, walked none and struck out three.
"It was unfortunate to lose a game when you get that kind of a start," UWM head coach
Scott Doffek said. "Brian scattered six singles without a walk … that is almost always going to get you a positive result. We had a few chances with guys in scoring position but just could not come up with a key knock."
The only run of the game scored early. A leadoff single was followed by a groundout that advanced the runner in the bottom of the second. Sean Murphy then came through with the big hit, with his single to center plating the game's only tally.
Jesse Scholtens (4-0) threw well for Wright State. He pitched the complete game, allowing five hits, walking one and striking out six.
"You have to give their guy a lot of credit," Doffek said. "He did a nice job and really made some big pitches. We will come out tomorrow ready to play. We need to play another clean game tomorrow and find a way to get some timely hits."
Senior
Derek Peake singled to lead off the ninth and was sacrificed to second. At that point Scholtens dug deep, recording a pair of K's, around a walk, to end the contest.
The Panthers collected five hits overall, but no player had more than one. Junior
Mitch Ghelfi recorded a triple with two outs, only to be stranded in the sixth.
The top two teams in the Horizon League are back at it tomorrow, set for a 1 p.m. CST first pitch.
