MILWAUKEE (February 15, 2015) –
Valparaiso (24-4, 11-2 Horizon) used an 11-0 second-half run to take control of the game and held off a late rally from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (10-16, 5-7 Horizon) for a 62-55 victory this afternoon at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena. The loss snaps the Panthers' five-game winning streak at Panther Arena.

"I'm proud of how our guys played. We have to be more efficient down the stretch, but we've played hard, with passion, with pride and with toughness," Milwaukee Head Coach Rob Jeter said.

The game was a tale of two halves as Milwaukee shot 50 percent (10-for-20) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, while limiting Horizon League leader Valparaiso to 27.6 percent (8-for-29). Steve McWhorter accounted for four points as the Panthers opened up an 8-2 lead four and a half minutes into the contest.

Milwaukee led by as many as eight points on a pair of occasions in the first period, the first coming on a three by J.J. Panoske that put the Panthers on top 21-13. Roughly three minutes later, an Akeem Springs layup pushed the Milwaukee lead to 28-20 but three straight points from Valpo sent the Panthers into the locker room with a 28-23 lead.

In the second period, Milwaukee led by as many as eight two times in the first 1:19, but the Crusaders, who shot 65.2 percent (15-for-23) from the field in the second half, went on a 15-7 run to even the score at 40 with a little over 12 minutes remaining.

McWhorter stopped the Valpo run with a three-pointer as Milwaukee reclaimed the lead but the Crusaders responded with 11 unanswered points to grab a 51-43 advantage. Another three by McWhorter got the Panthers within four (55-51) with 1:10 left to play, but Valpo hit three of four free throws down the stretch and Milwaukee turned the ball over twice and went just 1-for-4 from the field.

Matt Tiby totaled 14 points and eight rebounds to run his streak of consecutive games with 10 or more points to 17. McWhorter pitched in 14 points and Panoske added 10 for his best output since January 22 for Milwaukee, which shot just 33.3 percent (9-for-27) in the second half.

Darien Walker led Valpo with 18 points.

The Panthers close out the 2014-15 season by playing three of their final four games on the road, beginning with a February 19 trip to UIC.
