Panthers Storm Back To Down Raiders

Defense key to big win

MILWAUKEE – The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee made a strong comeback after a shaky start for a dramatic 3-2 win over Wright State University Friday evening from the Klotsche Center.

Playing in their first match at home in over a month, UWM (4-12, 2-2 Horizon) dropped the opening set to WSU (11-7, 0-3 Horizon) before storming back for the win, 18-25, 25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 15-11.

"This was a good win for us," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We had some goals coming into the night and were able achieve a lot of them. We need to do a better job of settling down early so we don't have to come from behind so that's a goal for tomorrow.

"This was a gutsy win though, and there were a lot of nice things that happened tonight. I thought Kaisa really came through at critical moments and the defense was really, really good tonight. We'll try to build off this and continue getting better tomorrow."

Four players reached double figures in digs for Milwaukee, led by junior Myanna Ruiz with 27. Mykie Olsen (15), Kayla Price (15) and Maddie Schmitz (12) all also did well defensively Friday.

Price also tallied 49 assists in the win for another double-double.

Three Panthers reached double figures in kills. Kaisa Mattson led way with 17 kills, followed closely by Maggie Dunbar at 15 and Jess Kalous with a season-high 10.

Milwaukee came out strong to start the match, staking a 7-2 lead to start. From there, Wright State was able to go on runs of three, five, three and five to claim the early lead.

The Panthers came roaring back in the second in a big way, hitting .333 for the set. UWM stormed out of the gates for a 10-4 lead after a Raider error. WSU would attempt to come back, closing it to a four-point Panther lead before Milwaukee would really turn it on. Mattson led the way with four kills in the set, with another three from Schultz.

It was a battle in set number three. Milwaukee would eventually lead 24-20 with four set points. Wright State battled back to 24-23 before a thunderous kill by Maggie Dunbar closed it out to give UWM the 2-1 lead.

Milwaukee nearly pulled off an incredible comeback in the fourth. Down by as many as seven two different times, UWM made a furious charge, drawing to within two late. But, the Raiders were able to do just enough down the stretch to force it to a decisive fifth set.

It was all UWM in the fifth. The Panthers led from start to finish, tallying 11 kills and committing just one error in the final set. WSU attempted to close the gap late, but big kills from Schultz and Dunbar closed out the set and the match.

It's right back to the Klotsche Center tomorrow afternoon as Milwaukee takes on conference newcomer Northern Kentucky at 4 p.m.
