Panthers Come Up Just Short In Title Match

Kolinske, Price named to all-tournament team

Rochester, Mich. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team battled all match long but came up just short in the Horizon League Tournament Championship Final, falling 3-1 to No. 1 seed Oakland in an extremely close contest Sunday afternoon from the O'rena.

Senior Julie Kolinske and junior Kayla Price both were named to the all-tournament team for Milwaukee, which finishes the season with a 17-14 record overall.

Oakland improves to 22-9 and claims its first-ever Horizon League title, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Kolinske was one of three Panthers in double figures in kills with 22 – a match high. Kaisa Mattson and Nicole Latzig had 10 apiece.

Taylor Golabowski again was outstanding on defense, tallying 17 digs, while Myanna Ruiz added 13.

Price again was the orchestrator of the UWM attack with 49 assists.

"We had some really good moments in that match but it was hard to sustain it," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "Oakland is a good team so you have to have longer streaks where you're getting more positives and we had too many negatives. Hats off to Oakland. They played well.

"This is a learning moment for our program. Thank you to our seniors, but the people who are returning need to learn from this because Oakland is a good team and we need to keep pushing back with more positives in a match.

"Second place isn't terrible but you don't feel good when you don't win it because you're really close. Overall, as a team we made a lot of progress this year so I was proud of them for that."

Despite trailing much of the way, Milwaukee was able to jump on top early with a first-set win. Oakland led 19-18 late, but a decisive 6-1 run, sparked by a huge block from Latzig and Kolinske sprung the Panthers to a 24-20 lead before a Kolinske kill put it away.

The Golden Grizzlies were able to battle back in the second and knot things up a one apiece. Milwaukee was never far behind throughout the set and actually drew to within one at 21-20. It looked like another impressive comebacks might be in the works, but Oakland was able to end the Panther run and knot the match up a 1-1.

Oakland raced out to a 14-7 lead in the third before Milwaukee came storming back. Mattson started things off with a thunderous kill and another block from Latzig and Kolinske capped a 9-2 run to close the deficit to just 19-18. But UWM couldn't get any closer, falling 2-1.

UWM came out strong in set number four. A solo block by Latzig and a kill by Mattson gave Milwaukee an early 9-6 edge. Oakland was able to battle back and the incredibly even set was tied at 24-24. But OU was somehow able to register back-to-back points to close it out.

"This conference had a ton of parity this year, so for us to finish second is still a strong finish," Johnson said "We came into the tournament with a lot of energy and a lot of positive play. Last night we were awesome and today we were pretty good. It just wasn't quite good enough."
