MILWAUKEE, Wis. (April 24, 2012) -
Kristen Weiss has been named to the staff of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team as an assistant coach, head coach Greg Henschel announced today.
The hiring rounds out the Milwaukee coaching staff, which also includes returning assistant David Madsen in the top assistant role.
"We are excited to welcome Kristen to the staff here at Milwaukee," Henschel said. "Her Division I coaching and playing background will provide our student-athletes another excellent resource to maximize their college experience. In addition, her playing experiences with the U.S. Women's National program will enable us to continue elevating the success that our women's team has become used to. She demonstrates a lot of passion and insight for the game and we look forward to having her bring those attributes to our Panther women's soccer team."
Weiss comes to Milwaukee after two years as an assistant at Maryland and a two-year stint at Clemson before that. With the Terrapins, she worked with the team's attacking players and as their camp director.
Weiss got her coaching start at Clemson, taking on various responsibilities within the administration of the program, including player recruitment, video breakdown, team travel and the coordination of campus visits for recruits. She was also the assistant director for Clemson's women's soccer camps.
Weiss played collegiately at the University of Virginia from 2002-06, amassing 10 goals and 11 assists in an injury-shortened career. As a Cavalier, she was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team in 2004, setting a tourney record for points in a game while leading Virginia to the only tournament title in team history. Following her college career, she spent a season as an administrative assistant with the UVA women's soccer program.
An Ohio native, Weiss remains the one of state's all-time leading scorers, finishing her prep career with 138 goals and 80 assists for 356 points. A three-time Parade High School All-American and four-time Ohio Player of the Year, she was the 2001 National High School Player of the Year. Weiss was also a
member of the U.S. U16, U17 and U19 Women's National Teams. In 2001, at the age of 16, Weiss was one of the youngest players ever selected to participate with the full US National Team, earning four caps at the Algarve Cup.
Weiss graduated from the University of Virginia in 2006 with a degree in anthropology. Weiss holds a USSF National "A" Coaching License.
Henschel is in his first season at Milwaukee after coaching both the men's and women's teams at Whitewater. Madsen is in his third season on the Panthers' staff, now serving as top assistant.
"We are blessed to have two quality individuals like Dave Madsen and Kristen Weiss on staff," Henschel said. "I look forward to working hard with them in an effort to continue developing Milwaukee Women's Soccer."
