MILWAUKEE - Holly Mertens had 12 kills and Marquette hit .327 as a team in claiming a 25-15, 25-11, 25-22 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Tuesday night at the Klotsche Center.

Julie Kolinske had 12 kills to lead Milwaukee, which pushed hard late in the third set before falling to a Golden Eagle team that was 28th in the latest AVCA poll.

Marquette had just 10 hitting errors for the entire match but committed eight of them in the tight third set. Milwaukee led by as many as three points in the frame and still found itself within 23-22 before the Golden Eagles made a final surge to wrap up the contest.

"We knew we were coming into a tough task and I felt like we started off wonderfully and stayed with them. We ended staying with them, but the in-between wasn't good enough," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "That team doesn't make errors and they're not going to give you anything, and they didn't do that in the end."

UWM was in the contest for much of the first set. The Panthers led 7-5 on a kill by Elizabeth Egerer and still were within 11-10 on a Marquette error. But the Golden Eagles made a decisive run from there, scoring 12 of the next 15 points to build a 23-13 lead before a kill by Erin Lehman finished things off.

Marquette was in control of the second set, scoring 12 of the first 15 points in the frame. The lead hit 16-5 on a UWM error and, though Milwaukee would close to within 17-9 on a kill by Rachel Neuberger, the Panthers could never truly get back in it. A kill by Danielle Carlson and then a block by Carlson and Casey Read wrapped up the set.

Milwaukee was solid in the third set. The Panthers grabbed a 10-9 lead on a Marquette hitting error and extended the advantage to 15-12 on a kill by Kolinske. The Golden Eagles countered with six of the next seven points to claim some control, though Milwaukee pulled back to within 23-22 on yet another kill by Kolinske. Marquette had the final answer, though, with kills by Mertens and Read finishing the match.

UWM wraps up the home portion of its schedule with two matches this weekend. The Panthers host UIC Friday night and Loyola Saturday afternoon.
