VALPARAISO, Ind. (Oct. 3, 2012) - Helen Steinhauser scored off a Kelly Lewers cross just 3:45 into the match and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team's defense made the goal hold up in defeating Valparaiso 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at Eastgate Field.

The Panthers (3-7-1, 2-2 Horizon) evened their league record at 2-2, while notching their second shutout in three games. Meanwhile, the Crusaders (7-4-1, 1-1 Horizon) also saw their league mark even out with the loss.

"We created some quality chances today and I thought our possession was great," UWM head coach Greg Henschel said. "We had possession with purpose and really tried to go at them and break them down on the ball. It was a good win to get."

The game's lone goal came in just the fourth minute when Lewers got the ball down the left flank and was able to get to the endline. She slotted a centering pass into a crowd of Panthers and Steinhauser was there to punch it into the net for her second goal of the season.

Milwaukee came out strong and controlled the possession early on, capitalizing on their best chance of the half. The team's momentum slipped towards halftime, but the Panther defense did well to hold off the Crusaders and take the lead into halftime.

After the break, UWM came out more assertive and did well to generate a number of chances, but was just not able to find the back of the net for an insurance score. On defense, Milwaukee was assertive and did well to frustrate the Valpo attack and keep the majority of its shots taken from distance.

Both teams took eight shots in the game, while the Panthers had the 2-1 edge in shots on goal. Valparaiso did forge a slight advantage in corner kicks, 5-4.

Jamie Forbes needed to make just one save for the Panthers in goal, picking up her fourth shutout of the season and the 24th of her career. Her counterpart, Kristen Manski, also had one save in the game.

The Panthers have a week off before returning to action Oct. 10 when they host Loyola at Engelmann Stadium.
