MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Sept. 7, 2011) -
Maegan Kelly chipped in the game-winning goal in the 109th minute to lead No. 12 Marquette past the No. 14 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team, 1-0, Wednesday evening in front of a school-record crowd at Engelmann Stadium.
The Panthers (6-1) lost their first game of the season, despite being just over a minute from a scoreless draw. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles (6-1) got the win and evened the all-time series at 7-7-6.
"We didn't quite get it done, but I think there is a lot we can build from," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We have a lot of youth and the season is a process. We're building and to play the 12th-ranked team in the country and take it down to 1:08 says something."
Kelly's goal capped an evening for UWM that saw the city's two Division I teams, both nationally ranked, battle on national television as the NSCAA Game of the Week on Fox Soccer Channel. The game drew 2,212 fans, the most to see a women's game in Engelmann Stadium history. The previous record was 1,309, the last time these two teams met on campus in 2009.
Jamie Forbes turned in a tremendous effort in goal, making nine saves in the game. The one shot she could not stop came off a play that started in the midfield. Lindsey Page sent a bounding ball towards the box and Kelly outraced her defender with the ball. She took a touch with her head and then chipped the ball into the net at 108:51.
The game was a back-and-forth affair in the first half, with Marquette getting the better of the play early. Forbes was the difference in the frame, making, among others, a pair of dynamic saves in goal. Milwaukee rebounded some in the second half, but the Golden Eagles fought for some dangerous chances over the final 10 minutes.
The Panthers continued to hold strong in the game, but it was the defense that shined. Mary Wandolowski cleared a ball off the line towards the end of the first overtime and UWM looked like fate was on its side as it inched closer to the shutout.
MU held a 19-6 shot advantage and both teams forced four corner kicks. Natalie Kulla picked up the shutout, making one save on the night.
Milwaukee returns to action with another key rivalry game, hosting Wisconsin Sunday at Engelmann Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
