MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 28, 2011) -
Sarah Hagen scored three goals and the No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team erupted for six second-half goals in defeating Green Bay, 7-0, on Senior Day Friday evening at Engelmann Stadium.
The Panthers (16-2, 8-0) led just 1-0, but hit their scoring stride in the second half and ran away for the win. They capped a perfect league record at 8-0 and enter the Horizon League Tournament next week with 16 wins on the year, tied for second-most in school history.
"It's nice to get back on the winning track," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "What I was pleased with was the quality of the goals, the intensity that we attacked with. We stayed pretty relentless. Green Bay is a team is very, very stingy, so that, to me, is very impressive."
The season ended for the Phoenix (3-11-4, 1-5-2), which entered the game needing a win for a chance to advance to the league tournament.
Hagen got the scoring started in the first half, heading in a corner kick in the 12th minute from Helen Steinhauser. That would be Milwaukee's lone first half tally, despite possessing the ball in its attacking half for the majority of the frame and a 7-1 shot advantage.
After halftime, the flood gates opened. Helen Steinhauser made it a 2-0 game in the 65th minute, the first of three UWM goals in a span of 3:30. Hagen was taken down in the box 1:50 later and easily converted the ensuing penalty kick.
Hagen then put the finishing touches on her first hat trick of the season another 1:40 later. She dribbled the ball into the box, had it knocked away, collected it and slotted it just inside the near post for a 4-0 lead.
Freshmen then scored the final three goals of the game to send the senior class out in style. Vienna Behnke struck for her first collegiate goal in the 73rd minute and was followed by Morgan LaPlant in the 80th minute. Then, in the final minute of regulation, Kelsey Holbert finished off a cross from Laurel Ragalie to make it 7-0.
The ball possession that was prevalent for the Panthers in the first half, continued after intermission. They finished with a commanding 27-4 shot advantage and the defense did well to limit any balls into the penalty area.
Jamie Forbes played just under 80 minutes in goal, making a routine save to keep the visitors off the scoreboard. Natalie Fettinger came in relief and kept the clean sheet intact over the final 10-plus minutes.
Maddie Drusch made eight saves in just under 66 minutes for Green Bay, while Katy Pilarzyk played the final 24-plus minutes and made two saves.
The Panthers continue their season next week in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament. Milwaukee hosts the tourney next Friday and Sunday at Engelmann Stadium and will play the lowest remaining seed after a day of quarterfinal matches Tuesday.
