NORMAL, Ill. (Oct. 23, 2011) -
Three different Redbirds scored as the No. 10/9 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team lost for just the second time this season in a 3-1 decision to Illinois State at Adelaide Street Field Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers (15-2) saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end in the loss. Meanwhile, ISU (10-5) won its fourth-straight game.
"We are obviously disappointed," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "The team takes it hard (when we lose) and we haven't lost in a long time. It's not a feeling we're used to or that we like, but I thought Illinois State deserved it. I don't the margin, though, was indicative of the game."
The two decisive goals came in the second half, despite Milwaukee holding a 9-7 shot advantage in the frame and the better part of the game's possession.
Rachel Tejada scored the game-winner in the 62nd minute, finishing off a cross from Aimee Wronski. Then, the Redbirds made it 3-1 with a controversial penalty kick from Jessica Carlson in the 85th minute.
Illinois State looked dangerous in the first half, going right at the Panthers and scoring early with a tally in just the seventh minute. But, UWM regrouped and, after conceding seven of the game's first nine shots, fought back to tie the score and take control of the game before halftime.
Krissy Dorre scored Milwaukee's only goal, taking a long pass from Kelsey Holbert in the box. She beat her defender twice and blasted a shot into the top of the net from the near side. The goal tied the game at 1-1 and came just 2:01 after ISU had gone ahead.
The Panthers finished the frame with a 10-9 shot advantage.
In the second half, Milwaukee had the game's momentum for much of the frame. Despite prolonged attacking possessions, the team's best opportunity came early in the half and was a driving header from Sarah Hagen on a diagonal ball into the box. Keeper Aryn Newsom was able to get a hand on the ball and tip it over the cross bar to safety.
Illinois State then struck on an extended possession and added an insurance goal when a point-blank cross was judged to have glanced off a Panther player's arm.
Milwaukee finished the game with a 19-16 advantage on shots and 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Jamie Forbes made three saves in the game, while Newsom picked up the win with five stops of her own.
The Panthers return to action Friday, hosting Green Bay in their regular season finale. UWM and GB kick off at 7 p.m. at Engelmann Stadium.
