CLEVELAND, Ohio (Sept. 26, 2010) -
Three different Panthers scored and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team outshot Cleveland State, 25-4, in handing the Vikings a 3-0 defeat Sunday at Krenzler Field.
Sarah Hagen had a goal and an assist and Sara Stern and Meghan Elvington had their first goals of the season as Milwaukee (6-3-2, 2-0 Horizon) dominated possession for the second game this weekend.
"I really liked the energy we came out with," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We put together a really solid first half. Cleveland State never really threatened. We probably could have been up more than two. I thought we had some chances. Overall, it's another win on the road and a 2-0 start to the conference season, so I'm happy with that."
The Panthers went at Cleveland State from the opening whistle, dominating possession in the opening half with a 15-1 shot advantage and five corner kicks. They had a number of chances and got on the board in the 13th minute.
Hagen got Milwaukee on the board when Kelly McGrath found her in the middle of the box with a through ball. Hagen then turned and beat the keeper from five yards out. Then, within three minutes of halftime, Stern made it 2-0 with her first collegiate score. A cross was played into the box, which CSU was able to clear away. The ball came to Stern, who calmly beat the keeper from the top of the penalty area.
The energy seemed to tail off in the second half, but UWM was still in control. The Vikings managed to get some bursts forward, but never threatened the shutout. Elvington gave the Panthers an additional insurance goal after Hagen hit the far post in the 88th minute. Elvington ran on to the carom and finished the ball into the open net.
For the game, Milwaukee held a commanding 25-4 lead in shots and 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Three keepers needed to make just one save to combine on the team's third shutout in four games.
Leslie Deebach started the game and played the first half. Jamie Forbes played the first 28 minutes of the second half and Gabby Guaiumi made her collegiate debut the team's lone save over the final 17 minutes.
Kelly Zinkiewich stopped 10 shots for the Vikings.
The Panthers close out their non-league schedule, and play the last of seven-straight road games, at Texas Friday.
