YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (Sept. 24, 2010) -
Sarah Hagen scored two goals to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Youngstown State Friday night at Stambaugh Stadium in the Horizon League opener for both teams.
The Panthers (5-3-2, 1-0 Horizon) outshot the host Penguins (2-8, 0-1), 20-3, and were never really tested in posting a third-straight win. Hagen scored in each half to pace the Milwaukee offense.
"I'm happy that we got the job done," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "The game lacked the energy and tempo we have gotten used to in recent games. Youngstown played back very deep and executed their game plan. They worked hard and did a good job double-teaming in difficult places, making it hard for us to penetrate at times."
UWM controlled the play throughout the opening frame, peppering the YSU goal with 11 shots and four on goal. Hagen's first goal came in the 38th minute on a penalty kick. She looked to work around a defender. She cut to the end line and was taken down. She then stepped up to the penalty mark and converted the PK to make it 1-0.
The play continued in the Panthers' favor throughout the half and into the second half when she struck again on a thoughtfully-placed header. Heather Roadhouse played a lofting cross to the top of the box where Hagen rose up to beat her defender and sneak her shot under the cross bar. That made it 2-0 in the 59th minute and sealed the win.
"I thought Apple's second goal was really nice," Moynihan said. "It was a nice serve from Heather and a quality finish. Starting off league play with a win is key to what we want to do. Getting a win road win in adverse conditions is a good start to the league season."
In addition to the sizable shot advantage, the Panthers also led in corner kicks, 6-0. They nearly added another insurance goal midway through the second half when Caity Bestwina lofted shot at that caromed off the face of the cross bar.
Leslie Deebach and Jamie Forbes combined for Milwaukee's second shutout in three games. Deebach played the first 64-plus minutes and made two saves. Forbes played the final 25 and secured the clean sheet without having to make a save.
Nicole Kline made seven saves in goal for Youngstown State on the evening.
The Panthers continue their swing through northeast Ohio at Cleveland State Sunday. UWM and CSU kick off at 11 a.m. central time.
