COLUMBIA, Mo. (Sept. 19, 2010) -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team scored three unanswered goals and held off a hard offensive push in the final minutes to defeat Missouri, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Walton Stadium.
The Panthers (4-3-2) adapted well to a rain-drenched field to hand the two-time defending Big XII champion Tigers (2-4-2) the loss. Makenzie Gillaspie, Sarah Hagen and Keara Thompson all scored goals to rebound UWM from a 1-0 deficit.
"It was another fantastic win on the road against another team--this team has won the Big XII the last two years," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We came into hostile territory and won another big game. The team has really made a lot of progress."
After a 22-shot outing in a 1-0 win at Kansas Friday, Milwaukee used just five shots to net three scores and finish the weekend 2-0 against Big XII teams.
Trailing 1-0, Gillaspie tied the score on a loose ball scrum in the box just three minutes after Mizzou took the lead. Alyssa Chamberlain was credited with the assist, slipping the ball to Gillaspie, who finished for her second score of the season.
Hagen gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead just minutes after halftime, finishing off a slick Gillaspie through ball in the 49th minute. The ball bent past the keeper who was off her line to Hagen, who slotted the ball past a defender for the goal.
Both Gillaspie and Hagen had a chance to push the UWM lead to 3-1 when Thompson eventually did in the 62nd minute. Nicole Sperl sent a free kick into the box where she had the team's three leading scorers waiting. The first two players were unable to get a foot on the ball, butThompson calmly finished at the far post with what proved to be the game-winner.
Missouri did not relent, pulling within one in the 73rd minute and pushing forward in the final minutes. Haley Krentz scored the goal off a broken corner kick to make it a one-goal game.
Sarah Thune got the scoring started in the 31st minute with her first goal of the season.
Despite taking just five shots in the contest, the Panthers were dangerous through much of the game. The offense got ahead of play at times, as UWM was flagged for six offside calls. Missouri took nine shots in the game was had three offsides calls. The Tigers received the majority of the foul calls, 16-11.
Leslie Deebach made three saves in preserving the win for Milwaukee. Two keepers split time for Mizzou and did not make a save.
The Panthers return to action with the start of Horizon League play next weekend. The seven-game road trip continues as the team heads to Youngstown State Friday and Cleveland State Sunday.
