LAWRENCE, Kan. (Sept. 17, 2010) -
Sarah Hagen found the back of the net off a 25-yard blast in the 96th minute to send the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Kansas Friday evening Jayhawk Soccer Complex.
The Panthers (3-3-2) came out on the victorious end of a back-and-forth affair to even their record and pick up their first win over the Jayhawks (3-4) in three tries.
"It's a great win on the road," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "It's a Big XII opponent, a very good team. They gave us some problems and created some dangerous chances we had to weather. I was very proud of the way our players responded in the second half to come back and put them under a ton of pressure. We had a lot of great chances."
Hagen's goal capped a furious offensive attack that started at halftime. Milwaukee managed just four shots in the first half, but took 18 after the break and controlled the pace of play for the remainder of the contest.
The winning play started when Keara Thompson played the ball across to Hagen, who squared up on the ball and blasted it near post into the upper corner. It was her school-record 12th career game-winner.
The stats reflected a fast-paced, technically-played game. Kansas actually forged a 24-22 shot advantage, but the Panthers took three more corner kicks (5-2). The Jayhawks' best chances came off the foot of Emily Cressy, who hit the crossbar in both the first and second half.
Leslie Deebach and Jamie Forbes combined on UWM's first shutout of the season. Deebach got the start and was replaced by Forbes at halftime, then checked back in after Forbes went down with a foot injury. Deebach finished with four saves in just over 77 minutes, while Forbes stopped two in 18:36.
The Panther defense did a tremendous job in front of the goalkeepers, limiting the Jayhawks to few shots inside the penalty area. The majority of the home team's attempts were from distance.
Kat Liebetrau withstood the Milwaukee attack for the majority of the game before allowing the deciding score. She finished with seven saves on the night.
UWM continues its roadtrip through America's heartland, playing at Missouri Sunday. The Panthers and Tigers kick off at 1 p.m.
