MADISON, Wis. (Sept. 12, 2010) - Laurie Nosbusch converted a header in the 17th minute for the game's only goal as Wisconsin defeated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at McClimon Soccer Complex.

The Panthers (2-3-2) lost to the Badgers (1-3-2) for the first time since 2005, capping a four-year stretch that saw UWM post three wins and a tie in the series.

Wisconsin was able to take advantage of an 11 on 10 situation on its goal, as Sarah Hagen left the game to address an ankle injury. She returned to the field after 10 minutes, but was limited to just 27 first-half minutes in the game.

"It's a little frustrating," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "I thought we controlled large portions of the game through the midfield with some decent play. We still generated some decent chances, but that final piece was missing. We were missing that punch in the final third. Sarah (Hagen) usually gives us that and today we weren't able to find it from somewhere else.

Meghan Flannery took a corner kick for Wisconsin early in the contest and sent a ball far post. Nosbusch was able to get her head on the ball and convert for what became the game's only goal.

"We were playing a man down when they scored on a set piece," Moynihan said. "Apple is our best header on set pieces. I'm kicking myself. We wanted her to be able to re-enter in the first half. Unfortunately, when she got back out there, she wasn't able to go. In hind sight, I wish I would have subbed a player"

Milwaukee controlled the play in the midfield for most of the game, but could not get on the board. The Badger defense was able to disrupt UWM's offense in the attacking third. Nicole Hirsch provided the team's best chance in the first half, sending a looping line drive at the Badger goal. Unfortunately, the ball caromed off the cross bar and the UW keeper collected the rebound.

In the second half, the Panthers continued to push forward, but could not convert. The Badgers did have an opportunity, but Alyssa Chamberlain headed away a shot sent on goal and Leslie Deebach made a strong save on a point-blank shot.

Deebach finished the game with seven saves, while her counterpart, Michele Dalton, made two for the home team.

Wisconsin held a 13-7 advantage in shots and 4-3 edge in corner kicks. The Badgers used a physical game plan to thwart the Panther offense and were whistled for 16 fouls to UWM's 10.

The Panthers are back in action next weekend in Big XII country. They head to Kansas Friday and play at Missouri on Sunday.
