MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Aug. 27, 2010) - Laurel Ragalie scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 1-1 draw with New Mexico in the first game of the 2010 Milwaukee Cup Friday evening at Marquette's Valley Field.

The Panthers (1-1-1) fell behind on a goal early in the second half, but controlled possession in the second half to fight back and force a draw with the Lobos (2-0-1). The tie snapped UWM's eight-game winning streak in Milwaukee Cup play, but extended its unbeaten streak in the tournament to 10 games (8-0-2).

"It was an unfortunate start for us," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "It took them scoring to really get going. Once that happened, I thought we started to play alright in the second half. We were able to get (11) shots (in the half). We put a lot of pressure on them. Overall, I didn't think we were crisp, just slow in reading things and capable of more for sure."

Facing a 1-0 deficit, Milwaukee maintained its composure and built towards the equalizer late in regulation. The play started on a free kick from near midfield. Mary Wandolowski sent a deep ball into the penalty area, where Sarah Hagen was able to send a header off the cross bar. Ragalie was in place to ball into the net from inside the six-yard box in the 82nd minute.

"It wasn't our best performance in terms of soccer," Moynihan said. "I think we showed the toughness and scrapped for that goal to tie the game. We probably could have had a couple others that could have won it. I credit them for their toughness. Some of them fought hard."

In the second half, UWM outshot the Lobos, 11-2, and forced five corner kicks. The Panthers played the majority of the half in the attacking end and held a New Mexico offense that scored 10 goals in its first two games at bay.

Ragalie's goal offset a score from Zaneta Wyne in the 53rd minute that put the Lobos ahead. Fields was set up by Stephanie Rowe, who worked the ball into the penalty area and left a ball for Fields to finish from 10 yards out.

For the match, Milwaukee held advantages in shots, 15-11, and corner kicks, 7-3. Leslie Deebach made three saves in goal for the Panthers, while her counterpart, Kelli Cornell also made three stops for New Mexico.

Hagen led the attack with seven shots, while Wandolowski's assist was the first point of her career.

The Panthers return to action at the Milwaukee Cup Sunday, taking on Auburn at Valley Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 11 a.m.
