PORTLAND, Ore. -
Sophomore Lonnie Boga had 16 points and 13 rebounds as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee wrapped up play in the Athletes In Action Classic with a 73-62 win over UC Davis Sunday at the Chiles Center.
Milwaukee (1-2), which shot 50 percent from the field for the game, built a 17-point second-half lead and then withstood a late surge by the Aggies.
Boga had a double-double by halftime in setting a collegiate-high for rebounds while finishing just one off of his career-best for points.
Ja'Rob McCallum added 10 points off the bench while four others had at least seven points. Milwaukee got 37 points from freshmen and sophomores.
Joe Harden scored 21 points and Mark Payne added 17 to lead the Aggies (0-3), who shot just 39.3 percent from the field.
The Panthers broke a 12-all tie with nine-straight points midway through the first half. A three-pointer by Boga made it 17-12 and a layup by the sophomore extended the edge to 21-12 with 9:50 remaining.
A conventional three-point play by Boga pushed the lead into double digits at 26-15 with 8:50 left and UC Davis didn't get closer than seven the rest of the half. The advantage grew to 37-25 on a Boga runner with 4:33 remaining and Milwaukee then led by 15 points when a jumper by Ryan Haggerty made it 41-26 with 1:22 left.
The lead grew to 45-28 after four-straight points from Anthony Hill out of halftime and was still 53-37 when Kyle Kelm hit a three with 14 minutes remaining. UC Davis did trim the lead to six on a few occasions down the stretch, but a three-point play by Hill and a basket by Kaylon Williams restored a double-digit advantage.
The Panthers had plenty of people involved in the offense, with Williams and Tone Boyle scoring nine apiece while Hill added eight in just 13 foul-plagued minutes. Kelm pitched-in with seven points and three rebounds while also adding a key blocked shot in 25 minutes off the bench.
Milwaukee returns to action Wednesday night, traveling across the country to play a BracketBusters return game against Niagara. That contest tips off at 7 p.m. EST/6 p.m. CST.
