Hagen's Record-Breaking Goal (Photos)
MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 8, 2010) -
Sarah Hagen scored two goals to break the Horizon League record for career goals and lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a convincing 5-0 win over Valparaiso Friday evening in front of 683 fans at Engelmann Field.
Hagen entered the game tied with Lisa Krzykowski for the school and Horizon League record with 57 career goals. She broke that tie in the 21st minute on a diving header off a cross from Keara Thompson. She then added a second goal in the 61st minute to make it 4-0 and finish the night with 59 career scores.
"There was a little bit of nerves in the beginning," Hagen said. "I was trying not to focus on that goal too much. Just trying to get the lead in the first half and I thought we played well. I just had a feeling it was going to come, but I couldn't have done it without Keara's serve and everyone throughout the season."
The Panthers (7-4-2, 3-0 Horizon) took some time to get on track in the first half, but when they did took control of the game and put it away early with three first-half scores.
"You couldn't really ask for anything more," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "Opening night, we got nice weather, a huge crowd and scored some great goals to start off. In the first half, we had a beautiful build-up and for Apple to score on a diving header to get the record for career goals, what a goal to score."
After Hagen's score, Makenzie Gillaspie converted a header off a cross from Helen Steinhauser in the 28th minute and Thompson scored a goal of her own on a loose ball in the 42nd minute.
Hagen then struck again in the second half and Meghan Elvington added the team's final goal in the 83rd minute. Hannah Kaul got that scoring play started with a streaking run through the Valpo defense. She crossed the ball to Elvington, who tucked it inside the near post.
Milwaukee outshot the Crusaders (5-6-3, 1-3 Horizon) 21-5 on the night, including nine shots by Hagen alone and a 10-1 margin in the second half. UWM also forced all five of the game's corner kicks and forced the Valpo keepers into six saves.
Leslie Deebach got the start in goal and made a single save in just over 66 minutes. Jamie Forbes played the remainder of the game and was relatively untested in securing the Panthers' fourth shutout of the season and third-straight to start league play.
The game was the first on Engelmann Field this season, following a resurfacing project that forced the Panthers into their first 12 games being played away from campus, including nine road games.
UWM returns to action Sunday, hosting Butler at 1 p.m. at Engelmann Field.
