DAYTON, Ohio (Oct. 24, 2010) -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team surrendered a late first-half goal and could not rebound in falling to Wright State, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field
With the loss, the Panthers (10-6-2, 6-2 Horizon) share the Horizon League regular season championship with Butler (6-2). The Bulldogs, who defeated Cleveland State, 1-0, in a lightning-shortened game, hold the tiebreaker over UWM via a 1-0 BU win Oct. 10 and will be the No. 1 seed.
"We really wanted to host (the league tournament)," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We are still happy to be sharing the championship, but now we'll have our work cut out for us on someone else's field. We've done it before and we can do it again."
Milwaukee and Butler own byes into the league semifinals, but the Bulldogs will host the semifinals and championship as the league's top seed. The Panthers are not the No. 1 seed for just the second time since 2000. The last time it had happened was 2008, but Milwaukee won two games at Loyola, including 6-2 over the top-seeded Ramblers, to claim the tournament crown.
The Raiders (10-8, 5-3 Horizon) scored the game's only goal on a corner kick in the 41st minute. Morgan Rice finished off Brittany Persaud's corner for her first goal of the season, one that proved to be the game-winner.
UWM controlled possession for much of the match with a commanding 19-7 advantage in shots, but could not find the back of the net despite 10 shots on goal.
"It's frustrating," Moynihan said. "I thought it was difficult situation to play in, but I still thought we did pretty well with it. I don't think we were dangerous enough in the final part of the field, dynamic enough."
Sarah Hagen and Makenzie Gillaspie took a game-high four shots apiece. Hagen hit the post with a shot in the second half and Gillaspie forced WSU keepers into three saves.
Leslie Deebach played in goal for Milwaukee and stopped two shots. Wright State split its two keepers, with senior Meghan Hackerson getting the start on senior day and making six saves in the first half. Brooke McCurdy played the second half for the host Raiders and saved four shots.
As the No. 2 seed, the Panthers will play the highest-seeded team to advance out of the quarterfinals. The semifinals will be Friday, Nov. 5, in Indianapolis, while the championship game is Nov. 7. Times are yet to be released.
In addition to No. 1 Butler and No. 2 Milwaukee, the other league seeds are No. 3 Cleveland State (5-3), No. 4 Wright State (5-3), No. 5 Loyola (4-3-1) and No. 6 Detroit (3-3-2). The quarterfinals will be held next Sunday with Detroit at Cleveland State and Loyola at Wright State.
