ROCHESTER, Mich. -
Sophomore Andrew Wiedabach scored one goal and assisted the other to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Oakland University Wednesday afternoon at OU Soccer Field. The Panthers (5-6-2) struck for a goal in each half to top the Grizzlies (4-8-1), with sophomore goalkeeper John Shakon making five saves to record his fourth shutout of the 2010 campaign.
"I thought it was just a really good team performance," UWM head coach Chris Whalley said. "It was great for us to get the second shutout in a row - especially on the road - and it was nice to score two goals. We created some really good chances and their goalkeeper made some nice saves. John Shakon came up with a couple nice stops of his own and I was really pleased overall."
Wiedabach assisted the game-winner in the first half and then added a goal in the second half to push his team-high point total to 11. He set up freshman Jordan Record for the game-winner in the 23rd minute before putting the game away at the 77-minute mark with his fourth goal of the year.
After junior Ross Van Osdol won a ball in midfield, Wiedabach did the rest, setting up Record for a 12-yard shot with the assist to make it 1-0 at the 22:42 mark.
"Andrew had a really good day," Whalley said. "He did the hard work on Jordan's goal and really played well."
It was Van Osdol winning another ball that led to the second goal, with Wiedabach and sophomore Robert Jarosz using a give-and-go to beat an offside trap and give Wiedabach a chance for the one-on-one scoring opportunity. He danced around the keeper and slotted the short shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0 and put the game away with just over 20 minutes to play.
Shakon was up to the task in keeping another clean sheet, making five saves to give the Grizzlies their second home loss of the season.
Record actually had an early chance to net his first and nearly had the fourth-quickest goal in program history. He had an opportunity on a drawn-up play just after kickoff, knocking one off the cross bar just 32 seconds into the match.
The match overall was quite similar statistically, as both teams had 14 shots, four corner kicks and five saves. The fouls were also close to even, with OU whistled for 17 of the 32. Wiedabach and sophomore Cody Banks led the offense with three shots each, with Oakland's Makesi Lewis recording a game-high five.
"One of our goals today was to give ourselves a chance to get to .500 following the game against UIC on Saturday," Whalley said. "We had a chance to rest some players today [senior Peter Sanger and junior Tony Maxey, both regular starters, did not play] and I made more substitutions than I normally do. We really had a chance to manage the game and get ready for the match against the Flames on the weekend."
That game is up next, with UWM welcoming UIC to Engelmann Saturday night, kicking off at 7 p.m.
