MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 10, 2010) -
Despite holding a 16-2 shot advantage and controlling play for much of the second half, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team could not overcome a 17th-minute goal by Katie Griswold in falling to Butler, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Field.
The Panthers (7-5-3, 3-1 Horizon) dropped a league game for the first time since Oct. 3, 2008, seeing their 22-game winning streak against league foes snapped. The streak is tied for the 10th-longest in NCAA Division I history.
"It hurts to lose a game like that," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "As high and excited we were after Friday night's game, this is the opposite extreme. They had one chance to score and they scored. We had numerous chances and did not capitalize on them all the way up to the last seconds. At the end of it, we did not come out to play with the intensity and energy we needed to in the first half and got behind. Butler did a good job of holding onto (the lead)."
Milwaukee also dropped a home league game for the first time in almost 12 years, seeing a 37-game regular season unbeaten streak (36-0-1) against league teams come to an end, as well.
The Bulldogs (5-9, 3-1 Horizon) scored early and managed to disrupt the Milwaukee offense for much of the day. They also won in the series for the first time in exactly 11 years (Oct. 10, 1999), snapping UWM's 16-game winning streak against them.
Griswold scored the game's only goal at 16:19 by finishing a cross that was slotted to her in the box. That proved to be Butler only real chance of the game, but was all it needed in getting the win.
Milwaukee's offense was disrupted in the first half and, despite heavy ball control and numerous attacks in the second half, could not find the back of the net. Olivia Walter was called on to make 10 saves for the Bulldogs and received help from the goal itself when Sarah Hagen blasted a 25-yard free kick off the cross bar in the 71st minute.
Nicole Hirsch nearly equalized the closing seconds, but saw her point-blank shot glance off Walter's knee with about five seconds remaining.
In the 51st minute, Helen Steinhauser got her foot on a loose corner kick, but volleyed her shot high. Four minutes later, Nicole Sperl put a free kick on frame from 25 yards out, but Walter made the save.
The Panthers' best opportunity in the first half came when Nicole Hirsch sprung Keara Thompson free on a nice through ball past the defense. Thompson received the ball, took a touch and blasted a shot that Walter was able to save.
The Panthers return to action next Friday, hosting Green Bay at Engelmann Field. Milwaukee and the Phoenix kick off at 7 p.m.
