IOWA CITY, Iowa (Sept. 13, 2009) -
The University of Iowa scored four times in the second half in rolling to a 4-0 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team Sunday afternoon.
"(The game) was extremely disappointing on a number of levels," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "The most telling thing is that we outshot them 17-14, but still managed to lose 4-0."
The Panthers (2-4-2) could not get their offense on track in the second half and after Iowa (4-2) scored its first goal, the Hawkeyes seized momentum of the match. Alyssa Cosnek scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 65th minute and capped the home team's scoring in the 79th minute with her second goal of the game.
Milwaukee actually held possession throughout much of the scoreless first half, proving to be the more dangerous side in the frame. The Panther attack had a number of dangerous passes through the Iowa defense, but to no avail.
The first 30 minutes, I thought we were phenomenal, creating chances," Moynihan said. "We possessed the ball. I thought we looked, by far, the dominant team. We hit a little bit of a wall and it seemed like we ran out of gas."
Its best opportunity came in the 16th minute when junior Nicole Sperl sent a long diagonal ball to senior Kate Megna on the near side. Megna headed the ball to the middle of the field, where sophomore Sarah Hagen volleyed the ball while fending off a pair of Hawkeye defenders. UI keeper Emily Moran made a falling save to preserve the scoreless match.
Hagen also hit the cross bar in the 55th minute off a blast from just inside the box.
After halftime, the UWM offense struggled to get on track, but held the Hawkeyes at bay until they broke through for that first score. From that point on, Iowa had control of the match and was able to capitalize on its chances.
The box score showed Milwaukee with the 17-14 shot advantage on the day, as it forced Moran into eight saves. The Panthers also took the game's three corner kicks.
Forbes started the game for the UWM and made four saves. Junior Leslie Deebach played the final 11-plus minutes in goal.
Milwaukee has now lost four-straight games for the first time since early in the 2004 season.
The Panthers return to action next weekend to close out their non-league schedule on the road against a pair of highly-ranked Big Ten foes. UWM plays at No. 7 Purdue Friday and No. 11 Illinois Sunday.
