MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Aug. 28, 2009) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team scored six second-half goals in handing Michigan a 6-0 loss in the first game of the 2009 Milwaukee Cup tournament Friday evening at Engelmann Field.

The Panthers (1-0-2) outshot the Wolverines (1-2) 21-2 in the second half and had nine corner kicks in the frame for their largest win over a non-conference opponent since 1997.

"It was a game of two halves," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "The first half we were not so good. I thought it lacked an edge, we lacked focus. I was pleased with the second half. We came out and scored some beautiful goals. We had nice possession, composure and a lot more focus."

Senior Kate Megna scored two goals and assisted on two others, while sophomore Sarah Hagen tallied a goal and two assists of her own. Senior Erin Kreuser tallied what proved to be the game-winner shortly after halftime, while junior Nicole Sperl had an assist and a goal.

Sophomore Makenzie Gillaspie added a goal and senior Kayla DeJardin and sophomore Keara Thompson chipped in with assists to round out the scoring.

Freshman keeper Jamie Forbes made a routine save to notch her third-straight shutout to start her career. She broke the school record for shutout streak to start a career, pushing her stretch to 310 minutes.

Milwaukee finished with a 24-5 shot advantage and 10-3 edge in corner kicks. Two Michigan keepers combined on four saves on the night.

After a somewhat lackluster first half, the Panthers came out of the locker room on a mission. They tallied six shots in the first eight minutes of the frame, accounting for the first two goals. Both scores came off corner kicks.

Later in the half, Milwaukee scored four goals in just over 10 minutes, finding the back of the net in the 64th, 70th, 72nd and 74th minutes.

Despite just six shots, the first half was not without its excitement. Milwaukee controlled the bulk of possession early and had a number of extended possessions in the attacking third. At the other end of the field, the defense held strong and stifled any possible Wolverine attack.

The Milwaukee Cup continues Sunday when the Panthers host Rice. Kick off is scheduled for noon.
