MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Aug. 11, 2009) - Sophomore Laurel Ragalie scored in the 43rd minute and every healthy player played as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Illinois State Tuesday evening at Engelmann Field.

The game was the first exhibition for both teams after preseason training started Aug. 4.

"I was very pleased. You use an exhibition game to work out some kinks and to see some different things," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "I was very pleased with the first half. We came out with what will likely be our starting lineup and they performed well. I like how we dictated every aspect of the game and created a lot of chances."

Ragalie's goal was the highlight of the opening half dominated by the Panthers. Milwaukee controlled possession with composed passes and tallied 13 shots in the frame, compared to just two for the Redbirds.

UWM's first scoring chance came in the 38th minute on a give-and-go between Ragalie and senior Kate Megna. Ragalie's through ball set up a point-blank shot for Megna from three yards out that Katie Grill-Donovan was able to smother.

Ragalie broke a scoreless time at 42:16 on a breakaway set up by freshman Megan Elvington and Megna. Elvington worked the ball through the midfield to Megna, who slipped a through ball through ISU's back line. Ragalie ran on to the ball, took a long touch around Grill-Donovan and finished far post from near the end line.

In the second half, the Redbirds went at Milwaukee and broke through for the equalizer on a corner kick in the 62nd minute. Illinois State gained a 10-2 advantage on shots, but were only able to score the one goal against freshmen keeper Gabby Guaiumi.

Junior Leslie Deebach started the game in goal and made one save in an uneventful first half. Guaiumi made her collegiate debut after the break and made three dazzling saves to keep the score knotted at 1-1.

For the match, UWM outshot the Redbirds, 15-12, with both teams taking four corner kicks. ISU was whistled for 15 fouls, compared to just seven for Milwaukee. Only three starters saw action in the second half, as six freshmen were able to get their first collegiate action.

The Panthers close out their exhibition season Sunday at Michigan State. Kick off is scheduled for 11 a.m. in East Lansing, Mich.
