ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Sept. 14, 2008) - BBrie Kuhne headed in a corner kick in the fourth minute of overtime to hand the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team a 2-1 loss Sunday afternoon in the Panthers' finale at the UNM Nike Classic.

The loss is the first of the season for Milwaukee (6-1-1), which saw its overtime unbeaten streak end at an NCAA record-tying 24 games (10-0-14). The Rebels (6-1-1), meanwhile, claimed the tournament title with a 2-0 record.

"We told our team that we learn from every game," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "There are things from our victories that we can learn from build on. And there were things from this game that we can learn and build from. We have another stretch of games that will be difficult and we will have to focus on."

The game-winning play came on a corner kick call that raised questions from the Panther bench. Despite the team's protests, the corner kick was upheld and Brianna Moore bent her corner to the far post, where Kuhne was there to head the ball into the net.

"Soccer can be a cruel sport and it can be so on a number of levels," Moynihan said. "We were very happy with our play and that call at the end of the game aside, we were happy with how our team played and hung in there."

UNLV had taken a 1-0 lead in the first half, but sophomore Sarah Talbert knotted the game at 1-1 in the 56th minute. Junior Kayla DeJardin played a ball into the far corner for junior Louise Vraney. Vraney beat her defender around the corner and slotted a centering pass to Talbert, who one-timed the ball near post from eight yards.

From that point on, the Panthers' patience paid off as they peppered the UNLV keeper with shots in the second half. They outshot the Rebels, 7-2, in the period and forced them to make three saves.

"I was really happy with our second half," Moynihan said. "We scored a great goal, completely dominated the play and really didn;t give up any threatening chances. I was pleased with our second-half performance."

The Rebels had gotten on the board with in the 23rd minute when Amanda Forrester played a through ball to the endline on the near side. Ashleigh Shoughro tracked the ball down and sent a low cross through the box to the far post where Moore deposited the ball into an open net.

Despite conceding the early advantage, Milwaukee looked to be in control of the match throughout the opening half, just missing on its passes in the attacking third. The Panthers best chance came in the 34th minute when sophomore Nicole Sperl ran onto a loose ball at the corner of the penalty area and rocketed a shot off the far post.

For the match, the Panthers held a 12-9 shot advantage and forced UNLV keeper Alicia Lugo into three saves. Senior Erin Kane finished with four saves on the day for UWM, but conceded the first overtime goal of her storied career.

Milwaukee returns to action next weekend at the Minnesota Gold Classic. The Panthers will play Boston University Friday and Brown on Sunday.
