DAYTON, Ohio (Oct. 5, 2008) -
Three different players scored and senior Erin Kane posted her fifth shutout of the season as the No. 22 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team rolled to a 3-0 win against Wright State Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Panthers (10-2-2, 2-1 Horizon) got back in the win column after suffering their first league loss in five years Friday. They also remained unbeaten against the Raiders (6-7-1, 1-2-1 Horizon) over the last eight meetings (7-0-1).
"I thought it was a good for us on the road, a good way to rebound from Friday night," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "It was by far the most physical match we've had this season. We'll probably have a lot of people banged up, so it was nice to have the depth we did and have as many people play that did."
Senior Sarah Teegarden got the scoring started, finishing a corner kick in the 43rd to send Milwaukee into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Senior Beth Steuer sent a corner kick to the near post, where junior Louise Vraney hit the ball at the goal and Teegarden finished for what became the game-winner. The winner was the ninth of her career, just two back from the school record.
Milwaukee was more dominant in generating chances throughout the game, gaining more and more momentum with each goal. In the first half, it outshot WSU 9-5, forced four more corners (7-3) and freshman Keara Thompson hit the post in addition to the team's first half score.
For the match, UWM held a 14-8 shot advantage and 5-3 edge in shots. Kane finished with three saves for the 41st shutout of her career, while Meghan Hackerson also made three saves for Wright State.
"I thought we started the game off pretty well and controlled the possession for the first 20-25 minutes and generated a number of corner kicks," Moynihan said. "The first goal was the result of persistence and following up second-chance opportunities in the box. We haven't had that a lot, so to get the first goal like that gave our players confidence. When we got the lead, the confidence kept growing and the goals kept coming."
Just over seven minutes into the second half, freshman Laurel Ragalie found the back of the net from three yards out. Vraney took a throw-in to the endline, dribbled around a handful of defenders and right at the near post. She laid the ball off to junior Erin Kreuser, who directed the ball to Steuer. Steuer neatly lifted it over the defender and Ragalie was there to run onto the ball and volley the ball into the net.
Freshman Sarah Hagen sapped the scoring in the 72nd minute, converting a penalty kick she drew. Vraney was once again a key factor on a scoring play, stealing the ball from a defender and sending a through diagonal into the box that Hagen ran onto. She was out ahead of the defense, but got taken down and was awarded a penalty kick.
"Louise gave us a big spark off the bench," Moynihan said. "The first goal she was the one that flicked it. The second one, she attacked from the corner and the first one she sent the pass into the box. To get that kind of a spark off the bench was very important for us."
Hagen then stepped up and converted the PK for her 12th goal of the season, tying a school freshman record.
The Panthers continue their road swing, returning to Ohio next weekend to take on Cleveland State Friday and Youngstown State Sunday.
