YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (Oct. 12, 2008) -
Freshman Sarah Hagen scored two goals for the second-straight game, including the game-winner, to tie the school goal scoring record and lead the No. 24 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 3-0 win against Youngstown State Sunday afternoon at Stambaugh Stadium.
Hagen's two goals brought her season total to 16, which ties the school record Lisa Krzykowski set in 1995 and tied in 1997. Meanwhile, her game-winner was also her school-record sixth of the season. The two-goal game was her second-straight and her fourth of the season.
"I looked at that that record and didn't think it would ever be touched," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said of the single-season goal mark. "A player like that comes along once in a program's history. It shows how special of a player Sarah is to tie Lisa's record. It's been 11 years and no one has come close. That just shows how special she is."
The Panthers (12-2-2, 4-1 Horizon) won their third-straight league contest since suffering their first league loss in five years Oct. 3. In that game, Milwaukee was also shutout for the first time this season, a trend that ended right away as it has scored 13 goals in the three games since.
Hagen got the scoring started in the 22nd minute off an assist from sophomore Sarah Talbert. Senior Sarah Teegarden actually got the play started, playing a ball forward out of the midfield to Talbert, who slotted a through ball to Hagen. Hagen ran onto the ball and blasted a left-footed shot far post.
She struck again in the Panthers' two-goal second half to make it 3-0 in the 72nd minute. Junior Erin Kreuser played a ball out of the midfield to freshman Keara Thompson. Thompson beat two defenders and sent a nifty through ball past the defense and into the box to Hagen, who calmly beat the keeper from 12 yards out.
Freshman Makenzie Gillaspie scored her second goal of the season off of a corner kick in the 59th minute. Sophomore Nicole Sperl sent a corner kick near the top of the box, where Gillaspie was open and able to head the ball into the goal at the near post.
Milwaukee was in control of the game throughout, dominating the shot count 22-7 and generating a number of scoring chances. In the 85th minute, the Panthers had a shot cleared off the line by a defender at he near post, resulting in a second corner kick.
"We generated some very good chances in the first half, but squandered them," Moynihan said. "We got better in the second half. Kenzie's goal was beautiful off a Sperl corner kick driven into the box. In both halves we had good build-ups that ended too often with shots over the goal. That last goal was off a nice build-up."
While the UWM offense was creating its chances, the defense was also up to the task. Senior Erin Kane made four saves for her sixth shutout of the season. Her counterpart, Mariah Snyder, made five saves for the Penguins.
"Kane had two big saves for us in the first half," Moynihan said. "(Youngstown State) came out, tried to attack and had some quality chances, but Kane came up big."
Youngstown State fell to 3-10-1 on the season and 0-4-1 in league play.
The Panthers return home to close out the regular season with a three-game homestand. Butler kicks things off Friday, Oct. 17.
