MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's soccer team took advantage of a miscue early and then scored late to put the game away in recording a 2-0 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team Saturday night at Engelmann Field. The Phoenix (4-5-3, 2-1-1 Horizon) tallied its first score on an own goal by the Panthers (3-6-4, 0-3-2 Horizon) and then added an insurance marker with an 89th minute goal to take possession of the Chancellor's Cup for the first time since the 2005 season.

"We didn't come out as sharp as we would have liked, but weathered the storm for the first 15 minutes," UWM head coach Jon Coleman said. "We can take a lot away from this, because we are playing well. It's just a matter of getting on the right side of the result and peaking at the right time."

In the 33rd minute, Green Bay forced one of its nine corner kicks. David Prochazka sent the kick floating to the near side of the goal box, where a UWM player's attempt to clear it with a header went directly into the net off the post.

Milwaukee had the better of the offense in the second half, outshooting UWGB 9-to-4 after intermission, but could not convert any of its chances. The Phoenix than iced the game late when David Znaty took a pass from 40 yards out, carried it to the goal, and created enough space with several touches before firing a 10-yard strike at the 88:06 mark.

"To give up an own goal was tough, but I thought we did very well in the second half," Coleman said. "We were pressing them and creating chances. We were waiting for the opportunity to come and it just didn't come. Then, when we continued pressing, they caught us in a transition to make it 2-0."

With the score 1-0 at the time, it looked like the Panthers would break through for that equalizer in the second half. Freshman Eric Frazier had one of the best chances in the 74th minute, but his blast from the top of the box after zig-zagging through traffic was altered just enough by the outstretched hand of GB keeper Adam Stikl to send the ball of the post and back into play.

The team also had a flurry of shots in the 69th minute off a free kick from the far side of the 18-yard box. Senior Adam Skalecki sent the ball in, finding junior Nicholas Gerard-Larson for a chance at the near post. His shot was blocked and went right to the feet of freshman Nick Dundon, who also had his close-range attempt blocked by the back line. After being played back out, freshman Tony Maxey played it back onto the box, but Frazier's header was saved.

For the game, Green Bay earned the 14-to-13 edge in shots with both teams sending seven on frame. The Phoenix held the 9-to-2 advantage in corner kicks and were called for 16 of the game's 28 fouls. In goal, Stikl finished with seven saves and senior Ryan Germann - making his first start of the season - was credited with five in defeat.

The Panthers continue their homestand next week, getting back on the field when they play host to Northern Illinois for the annual match-up for the LeWang Trophy. UWM and NIU get things underway Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
