DAYTON, Ohio -
DaShaun Wood scored 20 points and Todd Brown added 17 as Wright State avenged one of its two league losses with a 76-50 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Monday night at the Nutter Center.
Kevin Massiah led the Panthers with eight points and 11 rebounds, but UWM shot just 29.8 percent from the field and scored just six field goals after grabbing a 23-17 lead with 7:48 left in the first half.
Wright State took control of the game with two decisive runs. The Raiders scored 18 of the final 24 points in the first half and then opened the second half with a 17-0 run to take complete control of the game. Scott scored 13 of those first 17 points coming out of the locker room, pushing Wright State's lead to 52-29 with 15:08 remaining and ending any suspense in the game.
Roman Gentry and Ricky Franklin added seven points apiece for Milwaukee (8-18, 5-8), which shot 4-of-20 from the field in the second half and committed 20 turnovers for the game.
"When you shoot 20 percent in a half, that's just not going to get it done, especially when you play a team the caliber of Wright State," UWM head coach Rob Jeter said. "It's a good time for a break for my guys. We have nine days to regroup, and we're going to use that time wisely."
The game stayed tight through the first 10 minutes, with the Panthers jumping to a 10-6 lead before Wright State countered with an 8-2 burst to claim a 14-12 advantage. The Panthers then tried to open some distance in the game, using a 7-3 run to claim a 23-17 lead. A dunk by Massiah capped that run, but it seemed to spark the Raiders.
Wright State countered with 15-straight points of its own, 11 coming from Wood. A three-pointer by Wood, capping his run of 11-straight, gave the Raiders a 27-23 lead. The advantage eventually hit 32-32 before the Panthers responded, as five-straight points by Roman Gentry pulled Milwaukee back to within 32-28. But, Wright State pushed the lead back to seven before a free throw by Gentry pulled the Panthers back to within 35-29 at the break.
UWM now takes an extended break, not playing another game until a Feb. 14 home contest with Loyola. The contest will be the final regular season home game for the Panthers, who will honor seniors Kevin Massiah and Nick Hansen during pregame ceremonies.
