MILWAUKEE -
Seniors Steve Bode and Zeke Dombrowski of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team were both named to the All-Horizon League First Team today when the league office announced the men's soccer postseason teams and awards. Freshman Greg Rosenthal rounded out the winners by earning a spot on the All-Newcomer Team.
"I feel the awards for Steve (Bode) and Zeke (Dombrowski) are a tribute to their commitment to Panther soccer," UWM head coach Jon Coleman said. "And I think it is a reward for their hard work and a tribute to their talent. I think both guys have a bright future in the game."
Bode, a three-year team captain, has started and played in 17 games this season in his usual spot in the back line. This marks the third-straight season that he has earned postseason honors from the league, as he was a first team selection as a sophomore and a second team choice as a junior last year. His 85th minute goal against Marquette last week helped UWM earn a 1-1 tie and retain possession of the Milwaukee Cup.
Dombrowski earns all-league honors for the first time in his career. He has started all 18 games this season and leads the team in goals (4), points (11), shots (49), shots on goal (18), minutes played (1,640) and is tied for the team lead in assists (3).
He has been busy in the classroom as well, earning Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Week honors earlier this season. Last week, he was also named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Rosenthal has stepped right into the starting line-up as a freshman, playing a vital role in the defense after senior Chris Lins was sidelined with an injury at the end of September. He has appeared in all 18 games, making 15 starts. His 14 shots on the year include a goal against Cleveland State where he scored from just over midfield.
"For Rosenthal, it is a tribute to his ability to adapt and adjust quickly," Coleman said. "I think for him it's about his hard work and his ability to make the adjustment to play at this level. I feel that it is the start of something great for him.
"For all three, you have to credit the teammates they have around them to help them achieve and receive these awards."
Loyola, which won the regular season title, took home most of the major awards. Michael Ferguson was named Horizon League Player of the Year and the Offensive Player of the Year. Defensive Player of the Year honors went to his teammate Iradj Farahmand, while Brendan Eitz was named Coach of the Year. Rounding out the list was Valparaiso's Ryan Schwarz as Goalkeeper of the Year and Wright State's Carl Ebers as Newcomer of the Year.
