MILWAUKEE -
Senior Steve Bode scored in the 85th minute, helping the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw with cross-town rival Marquette Wednesday night at Valley Fields. The tie against the Golden Eagles (2-11-4) also allows the Panthers (5-10-3) to maintain possession of the Milwaukee Cup.
"I thought we played well enough to win but I think we were a little tentative at times and a bit unfortunate," UWM head coach Jon Coleman said. "We definitely feel good about the cup because we put ourselves in a situation now, going into Tuesday's game, to end up with all three cups [Milwaukee plays Northern Illinois for the LeWang Trophy] this season."
Neither team created any real quality chances in overtime, with senior Zeke Dombrowski getting Milwaukee's lone shot on goal eight minutes into the extra session, a 30-yard shot in the run of play that hugged the ground for an easy save.
Bode tied the game at the 84:52 mark, volleying a well-placed corner kick from senior Martin Castro into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Junior Adam Skalecki helped set up the equalizer, as his shot attempt just before the corner was barely saved by the MU keeper, who pushed it up and over the cross bar to give UWM its 10th corner kick of the night.
"I think now it's important because as the season wears on and we get down the stretch to the final portion of the season, you have to believe in yourselves and you have to claw and you have to fight," Coleman said. "And we did that tonight."
Milwaukee was the aggressor all game, putting plenty of pressure on the Marquette defense the entire match, outshooting them, 14-to-seven, in the game.
Down 1-0 after an MU goal in the first half, the Panthers had a couple of solid chances earlier in the second half to tie it up. Dombrowski had a chance in the 62nd minute, sending a shot just wide from the top of the box. Skalecki also nearly found the equalizer with just under 15 minutes left, as his attempt off a long throw-in from junior Travis Phillips was saved at the post by Matt Pyzdrowski.
Dombrowski was unlucky all night, one-timing a rocket just wide from about 30 yards out in the 36th minute and getting stopped at point-blank range off a long free kick in the 26th minute.
Dan Addis scored the first goal of the game, catching a lucky break when his header off a long cross from the end line hit the cross bar and bounced in at the 25:03 mark.
Junior Grant Fernstrum was credited with two saves in the game, with Pyzdrowski recording five. In addition to the shot advantage, UWM also forced 12 corner kicks to just four for Marquette, while both teams were whistled for 15 fouls.
The Panthers play their final game of the regular season next week, looking to regain possession of the LeWang Trophy when they make the trip to face Northern Illinois Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
